Looking back and my old drawings (Window)
I drew this about three years ago,
and simply called it “Window”. It was the first drawing where I started playing around with more complex lines, trying to give them more depth and weight. The solar theme is prominent…
“Window to Sol"
After the first drawing (Suntower), I spent 4 or 5 hours a night drawing after work. I’ve always started with finding the center of the page, and then bisecting the page horizontally and vertically with a light line using a 0.3mm mechanical pencil. Then, a simple pattern… maybe three circles placed along the vertical centerline, equally spaced from each other and the edges of the paper, for example.
In this case, I definitely started with the center, and put heavy emphasis on the vertical and horizontal bisectors. The work flow is simple but sometimes a little tedious:
I start all of these geometric drawings (I like to call them geometric impressions) by drawing several very fine lines as suggestions. Then I add circles (or vis-versa). I try to keep to the predefined pattern, centering circles on significant intersections of the emerging pattern of lines.
Also, Don’t forget good music (and/or Terence Mckenna… if you’re into it!)
It’s critical, though, when the drawing has reached a certain degree of complexity (not too much…), to stop drawing and start erasing. Focus on removing some of the lines between the points of intersection, but leave the points. It’s a great exercise for listening to a quiet artistic instinct slowly (oh… so sloww.) guide the eyes and the hand, carving out a shape that retains some semblance of logic and flow.
Close-ups reveal neat little design ideas of their own:
Have a nice day, and thanks for viewing!
