Neal Stephenson's Snowcrash Character, Y.T. - Digital fan art & mini review

Y.T.'s prefered method of transportation is the Radiks Cyber board. The board is equipped with smart wheels that can take the shape of cracks, curbs, and bumps.

Satirical Cyberpunk

Neal Stephenson is one of my all time favorite authors. Snow Crash was the first of his novels that I read back in 2004. I have been a huge fan of his work ever since. He is the only writer that I know of that is capable of combining cutting edge Cyberpunk with satirical humor. Stephenson can go from purely scientific to utterly slapstick in a nano second.

Being a Cyberpunk story, Snow Crash takes place in a Dystopian Los Angeles that is no longer part of the United States. Here we see themes of Anarcho-capitalism and Crypto currency. It's amazing to think that he came up with these ideas in the early 90's. Perhaps he saw it coming...

The Internet has become a virtual Reality landscape called the Metaverse. Here, all users are represented by their Avatar. Interestingly, Snow Crash popularised the term avatar just as fellow Cyberpunk author William Gibson coined the term Cyberspace. Stephenson is big into cryptology and computer code. These are some of the main themes in Snow Crash.

Now, as this is a mini review and I really don't want to spoil the story for anyone who hasn't read the book. I am going to keep this short and not reveal too much about the characters. You can find out more on Wiki. Warning! Major Spoilers - Wikipedia Snow Crash review

If I were you, I would go ahead and buy this book or download it on Kindle. You will not be disappointed. It is absolutely brilliant. They've been talking about making a film for years and I hope it happens :)

Now, let's take a look at the design journey!

Now when I do digital Vector art, I usually employ lighting and other visual effects. On this one, I decided to leave the image flat. This gives the character a very comic book/cartoon visual style. I'm quite happy with the way Y.T. looks here :) Almost looks like a mobile game.

As you can see, I initially drew her standing as well as putting her knee up. This allowed me to have a choice of poses to choose from. I actually didn't bother to go over it with pen

  • Early Vector

This was me doing the tracing on Affinity Designer. it's all down with a mouse.

There she is! Your Truly... I hope I did her justice. I'd love to know what your opinion is.
