All In One Stone (#107)
"But I do sometimes wonder: why do we do things the way we do them. I do not know. It is often a reaction.
Looking at the Internet you think: very interesting. On the other hand, the human factor can easily disappear into the background.
So in my designs I try to show a respect for tradition. Not that we are anti-computer, because we are technologically advanced. But I refuse, for example, to create my patterns on a computer.
The thinking process is also very important. When you sit in front of a screen and make combinations, you often make decisions way too quickly.
If you do it by hand and you are cutting pieces, you feel the fabric between your fingers, then an image is created much more in a natural, human, way.
You need inertia in your creations. Sometimes I think I am getting terribly old-fashioned. But what use is it making everything go faster and faster?
Do we all have to work twenty hours a day?"
Excerpt from interview with Flemish Fashion Designer Dries van Noten in de Volkskrant, sometime in the Nineties
