Golden Harvest
Who:
This was a personal project to share with my family as we mourned the passing and celebrated the life of my grandmother.
What:
The image is mostly fiction, but inspired by a real place and time. When I was old enough, I would go out to the farm to help with harvest. My father was always there helping grandpa, and I was able to help a bit here and there as well. Grandma managed the local phone company, but she would go home on her lunch break, fix us men lunch, and bring it out to us in her business suits. Times were different back then, and I had no idea how amazingly strong and capable she was until I was much older.
I used a lot of reference for this image to get the vehicles and buildings right, but the most important thing for me was that it felt like fall time and had that near-heavenly feel about it.
When:
I started and completed this piece in a day last week before heading home to be with family.
Where:
It was created entirely in my home studio.
Who:
My wife and I were able to share this image with our family by having the image printed on magnets for each of the families. They seemed to really enjoy them, and I am very pleased we were able to do that.
How:
This image was conceived in the very moment my sister told me grandma had passed. I spent a day thinking about it, then set to work when it would not leave my mind. I texted my brother to ask for some reference images of the barns, and worked it out in Photoshop CS6 over the course of a single day. I painted it with my Wacom Cintiq 13HD in Photoshop from start to finish.

What a wonderful tribute and such a great way to express some of the feelings and emotions that simply can't be described with just words. And to capture it in a way so that it can be shared with the rest of your family - I think your grandmother would be very proud of you :)

Oh, yes. I'm not really sure how much she enjoyed though. My family is mostly very rural-oriented, and my grandmother was very country-western and gospel in her lifestyle. I think all the comic book, fantasy, and sci-fi stuff was just weird to her, but she was encouraging nonetheless. lol.
I do have a cousin who does graphic design, but I honestly do not know his relationship to our grandmother or if she was equally encouraging to him.

To be honest I didn't get to spend very much time with my grandparents, but they were always happy to see us and encourage whatever we did. I suppose I see some of the things that people do online these days by younger people to be a bit weird as well, but at least I can see the passion and enthusiasm that you need to be creative and good at what you do. Good luck and I am sure we'll cross paths again soon on Steemit :)
