Punk with illustrations

in #art6 years ago

Welcome, dear readers, I hope you are well and I wish you a wonderful start to the week!

Today I come to talk a little about the punk movement, for it I did a somewhat extensive research and some illustrations that allude to the subject, elaborating them with pencil, pen and markers based on 4 colors: white, black, red and green.

Without further ado, let's start the trip:

Punk-1.jpg

Do you like the transgressive style?
Do you like heavy music?
Do you consider that music with protest themes is important?
Do you think that you are not part of any system?
Maybe, this post is for you.

On this occasion we will talk about the punk movement, which is characterized by being quite transgressive and rebellious, having different problems in terms of authority and the "system" in general, it can be said that its main "objective" is to promote Anarchy and ideologies of freedom, with movements that emerge after this first, as the "anarcopunk" uniting themes of anarchy, style and ideology of the genre punk. It is important to know that the punk movement emerged as an uprising against the "lost culture" at some point and places where it was forged this also considered "lifestyle".

In this article we will deal with several aspects of this culture (or counterculture?), I will explain better later in this post, since punk has a long history to tell, even bringing arts and concepts with genres such as "fanzine". Despite being accused of being violent in some cases, they are also appreciated for their way of expressing themselves freely.

Keep in mind always throughout the post the "DIY ethic" because it is one of the things that this movement seeks, ethics of self sufficiency and detachment:

"Do It Yourself"

Refers to the ethic of self-sufficiency through completing tasks without the aid of a paid expert. Literally meaning "do it yourself", the DIY ethic promotes the idea that anyone is capable of performing a variety of tasks. The DIY ethic requires that the adherent seeks out the knowledge required to complete a given task.

The punks promote above all self-sufficiency, often arranging and mending their own clothes, putting patches on their pants and jackets, also creating their own style with dark colors complemented with striking colors even in the hairstyles that often perform as the legendary " mohican ".

Origins.png

The social and historical context where punk is born as a musical genre and cultural movement is at the end of the 60s and the beginning of the 70s, in England and the United States. Both societies saturated with rigid socio-cultural norms and stereotypes of the good citizen, who tried to hide the social and cultural oppression of the time that young people suffered, who saw no future, in a society that was facing a deep economic crisis.

punk-2.jpg

In the world of rock, due to other movements like the hippie, triumphs megabands of symphonic and psychedelic rock, super technical compositions, huge stages and hyper expensive recordings. This style had little to do with the world in which the young people of the lower middle class neighborhood lived, who can not be identified with this music.

The punk movement also emerged as a response to the cultural decay that existed in those years, although ... they say that culture is not "lost", "only transforms" (like matter), but many people from that era ensured the existence of a deep cultural and social loss, which gave rise to the creation of new anarchist ideologies and movement that fostered free expression and culture.

At the same time that psychedelic rock groups and soft tones excelled, a genre with coarser and cruder sounds emerged, with simpler but strident rhythms, more raw lyrics that were often based on social criticism and protests against the "system" and norms that according to punks could be considered "absurd" and "meaningless".

It is important to talk about the constant confrontation that existed between the hippie and punk movement, which today is not so frequent, but in those years it was bestial and constant, since they had very different thoughts while the hippies promoted peace and free expression to through protests and peaceful encounters, the punks easily arrived at physical confrontations to get what they wanted, making it later think that the whole punk movement was violent and radical.

punk-3.jpg

Punk aesthetics is based on the fundamental principle of visual provocation, that is to say, "aesthetics" is anti-aesthetic, seeking the provocation and expression of the ideals of contempt for the bourgeoisie and everything related to it; use of old and tattered clothes:

  • Boots: the boots are used as a mockery towards the military and the forces of public order, the braids can be worn in different ways, white and black are anti-racist and infinity of representative colors.

  • Converse: they are used (or used) because in their time they were the cheapest shoes and the only ones that the working class could afford.

  • The pyramid belt: This represents the tribe of mupuches who used pyramids with astrological functions but not religious and this tribe was the first to resist before an empire.

  • The crest or mohican (mentioned above): As its name says it represents the tribe of the Mohicans who were extinct when fighting before the English Empire. The first punk used them to get attention in England in 1977.

  • The Chains: It represents how most people are slaves of the system, it also means freedom, since when people are put in jail they put chains on them.

  • Pins: The meaning of pins represents resistance and rebellion, the primordial basis of punk.

  • Tie (sometimes): The tie is nothing more than an uncomfortable garment, symbol of the society against which they fight, it is simply used as a mockery to the system.

Culture-and-counterculture.png

From the rejection of the established fashion catwalk, punk has been social reflection of the last decades of the twentieth century through convulsive melodies and the "do it yourself" as one of its most symbolic ideologies, has come to stay and work as a reminder of all the social deficiencies that have existed and still exist.

The punk movement is often considered a "counterculture" given that it goes against many established norms and rules, it is in search of freedom, an aspect that is reflected both in its ideology and in its dress and its emblematic musical style. It has evolved over the years.

punk-5.jpg

In turn, it is mostly understood as a culture by people who are independent of this movement. Undoubtedly, punk has been postulated as a new ideal that handles philosophies, aesthetics, music and particular thought, which is also reflected in his artistic style "fanzine", which translates into publications made by fans mainly using cuts, colors and pencils. , markers and unconventional elements, such as: recycled paper, vegetable pigments, among others, while nowadays you can see digitally made fanzines or using manual and digital resources; Both his art and his music are based on protest and freedom.

Going against the established, the punks promote the "F *ck the system", which can be translated as a very beastly response towards governments and dictatorships around the world, believing that the people who are inside or support the politicians are "sheeps" or a species of livestock that will always be obeying this system.

punk-4.jpg

Anarchism, self-management, independence and nihilism are some of the philosophies on which punk thought is based; understand by nihilism:

It is the rejection of all religious and moral principles, often in the belief that life has no meaning. Nihilism is often presented as existentially, a form in which it is argued that life lacks objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value.

In punk thought, the authorities are corrupt and intolerable. The police, religion, governments and any other institution can repress the human being, considering them dangerous for society. Many authorities always lead to corruption and abuse. The ideas on this subject come, in part, from the ideology of anarchism, as a result of the police brutality with which the police oppress some citizens and the institutionalized discrimination against the punks are also caused as a result of the anarchist position against The authority.

And remember ... a punk will always promote DIY ethics, being self-sufficient is a priority in this movement, they think fervently that knowledge is important and the acquisition of knowledge is much better and more efficient when acquired in a self-taught way, of course , you can always learn from other people, but the important thing is to do it autonomously and to investigate later on the knowledge received.

Music.png

This genre is characterized in the music industry by its independent and countercultural attitude. In the beginning, punk was a very simple and crude music, sometimes neglected: a simple type of rock, with aggressive melodies of short durations, sounds of amplified little controlled and noisy guitars loaded with a lot of distortion, few arrangements and instruments and, usually, fast compasses and tempos.

The guitar lines are characterized by their simplicity and the rawness of amplified and highly distorted sound, generally creating a noisy or aggressive sound environment inherited from garage rock. The bass, on occasion, follows only the line of the chord and does not seek to decorate the melody with octaves or arrangements but, generally, in the early punk ensembles (something that would be repeated later with the post-punk bands) bass presents simple but constant arrangements, looking, in many cases, more than the guitar.

punk-6.jpg

The battery on the other hand has an accelerated tempo, with simple rhythms of rock and roll. The voices vary from strong expressions and even violent or torn, while the lyrics are characterized by dealing with issues such as political and social problems (carrying with it a message of conscience that extends, trying to denounce this kind of problems through music and they even deal with topics such as no to drugs, love, pacifism, among others).

Given the fast melodies and the trangresora letter gave rise to a style of "dance" called pogo and his invention is attributed to Sid Vicious, bassist of Sex Pistols, during a concert of the band Bembex Kollective, before being part of it . Apparently in that concert there was no stage, the band played at the same level as the audience, and as he could not see anything he started jumping to see the band, and pushed sharply (hitting) the members of the Bromley Contingent (a group of recurrent in the concerts), whom I hated and were always ahead of. the dance takes its name from its resemblance to the use of a pogo stick, especially in a common version of the dance, where an individual keeps their torso stiff, their arms rigid, and their legs close together.

And to finish here I leave you some songs in case you want to listen to them:

English:

Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen

The Stooges - I wanna be your dog

Misfits - Scream!

BAD BRAINS - 'I Against I'

Spanish:

REINCIDENTES - "Terrorismo"

FRENTE DE IRA - VIVIR CRECER Y SER

Sin Dios - Ingobernables

La Mueka - Golpea y se va

Hah man, what a nice well-behaved and educated summary of this uneducated fools in eyes of many :D

I've never really been into the punk music and in my hometown, these punkers are kinda stupid. My group had couple of fights with them soo I kinda started to hate punk without actually knowing much about it. I like the sex pistols tho, haveactually been to the live concert :)

Hi bro, I'm a girl, hahaha. I really did the article because I like music and somehow I'm curious about its aesthetics. I'm not really a punk, but I liked to illustrate and investigate for this topic. Greetings and good vibes!

Thanks for the big support!!!!

I remember that movement when it was started especially living in exUSSR that was a hot topic N1. Everyone who were more or less interested in punk and supporting them were counted as bad guys and hooligans. Of course it was forbidden. That is why for many years I have had no idea what it is but because it was forbidden that made it interesting too. I remember many movies about that and Music group as well who also were forbidden but still you could buy some of their Audio tapes not officially. That is why your article made me again to think about that time and it is interesting to hear your thoughts and views :)

Hi, I personally did not live that moment when he was involved and it is not so relevant where I live, however, I like his music and something in his aesthetic seems curious, but although I share the taste for the genre, I do not agree. Some of their thoughts Many are radical and I do not like that, but I like that they fight for what they want and in turn promote freedom. Yes, when I researched I saw some prohibitions, but in this article I just wanted to treat the subject as a culture (or counterculture). Thanks for the comment, you are always welcome. Greetings and good vibes!
