Entry for STEEMIT STARS contest by @dobartim Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse"

in #art8 years ago

Yesterday I made the decision to do more daily drawings that I just post. I am always drawing and creating, but usually my pieces are more involved finished pieces, so I decided to start doing a complete black and white drawing. Maybe not everyday, but most days.

Then I cam across this contest because of @cookiespooky. Funnily enough, it was his daily pen drawings that inspired me to start doing more daily drawing posts. So, today I saw he was entering this wonderful contest he mentioned and decided to give it a go as well. I'll combine my daily draw with the contest.

And being inspired yesterday by Virginia Woolf's birthday I did this piece of a young Virginia in an art nouveau style. Therefore today's #dailydrawing is also made for @dobartim contest found here. The work is based on Virginia's famous novel "To the Lighthouse".

My drawing is depicting Mrs Ramsey longingly looking to the lighthouse where she wishes to take her son and the female artist character, Lily Briscoe, trying to capture Mrs. Ramsey in a portrait. The painter character in the book is plauged by doubts and uncertainty and Mrs. Ramsey is caught in a struggle with her husband to find the time to take her young son out to the lighthouse.

I wanted to capture the tension of the artist's failing attempts by her subjects abject uninterest in her and to push that tension with the foreboding of Mrs. Ramsey looking to the lighthouse and it all appearing to be at night or in a fog, as in the book Mrs Ramsey is kept from sharing the joy of the lighthouse from her son due to the weather not being clear.

Here is a larger version of the drawing, as I always need to post a smaller version to fit the thumbnail.

This contest seemed very Steem to me as it is for anyone creative, whether art or music or what have you. You simply post your piece or video or whatever to their comments and you have entered. I think it is the essence of Steemit that across the platform of creativity we all can interconnect and make a wonderful new online community.

So, find some time to read some Virginia Woolf and if you like, enter this fun contest here. And if you like my piece, you can vote for it when the contest posts the finalists.

this is really nice. it reminds me of Art Nouveau. I hope you win, I can see this in a literary publication or used as a book cover. :]

Thank you. I love art nouveau style and poster arts as I always felt it was a time that had the right combination of graphic, decorative, and flourish of line, all things I am just naturally drawn to.

your love for those elements comes through here, I think follow your heart and keep exploring this style. I'd love to see some posters for some of your favorite films or books using your style.
Alfonso Mucha was one of my first illustration heroes, and I really feel that we are entering an age where artists can revive so much beauty into the world.

anyway, nice work and look forward to more from you.

OH MY GOSH!. I have never seen black and white art. I love it. So very awesome. I hope you win the contest.

Thank you so much. I mostly like to enter the contests to meet other creative people. It sounds corny, but just entering is sort of like winning, because you get to find so many other creatives entering and thing you find new people to follow and share with :) I am glad you like it.

Yes. I find the same about running. The winning is in being in the race with the other runners.

@donnadavis, this is so complex and great work. Story, drawing, lines, composition, way you used art of her time...Just love this piece a lot, brings some peace in me while looking it.

Thank you. I love doing black and white drawings, they are like a palette cleanser between my more involved works. I love stores and fiction too and most of my work has been a little story in my head and I love VW so I really wanted to do a representation of To The Lighthouse, a work I have read so many times. When I was done I thought, "Oh it'd be kind of cool as a book cover" I will probably add text and use it on things. Thank you for your compliments.

Looks like we have so much in common :) There is always some story behind my work too, they are sort of triggers for work.
And yes, this would be a great book cover, try it :) Hope one day someone will publish it.

Yes we do! It's really fun to sit down and create the story that is happening in our head, that is the joy and privilege of being an artist.

Nice one. I wish I had more free time to create art for all the cool contests on here! I participate when I can though - and when I remember to do a colorchallenge post lol

I really love doing challenges and contests. It was sort of a new years resolution. I try to make an 'art resolution' each year and that was it, to do some contests/challenges each month on STEEMIT. I've really enjoyed it! I always forget colorchallenge though, silly me. Maybe I'll do one now, that you have said it! See, STEEMIT is so good for motivation!

Here is a larger version of the drawing, as I always need to post a smaller version to fit the thumbnail.

Thumbnail will fit automatically. Smaller version is usually needed if you have work in “portrait” orientation, and you want to put exact part of your work in the “landscape” orientation of a thumbnail. Otherwise, thumbnail will cut 16:9 “landscape” part from the middle of your vertical or “portrait” work.

And you have a great drawing, @donnadavisart, good luck at the contest.

Thank you the thumbnail always cuts the heads off or makes an odd arbitrary section of my work show up and it's never the image I want to show, that is why I put a large border around to squish it down to include full image. ON my last painting post though, I found just a cropped close up of my work in a landscape ratio works better. cheers :)

Wou.... You managed the perspective in an emotional way, I like it! Good lock in the contest, artistic colleague! :D

Thank you, I like to play with that. You should enter the contest!

Hey there! Great post and great art, I love your work. Just wanted to let you know that I'm a fellow contestant and I voted for you on the contest today because of your work I have seen recently. Good stuff! Check out my entry #32, and my other work on my blog @admwolgamott I'm seeking to network with talented artist and would love your support!

Will do and thank you for liking my works :)
