La pintura Saturno Devorando a su Hijo, fue una de las pinturas que adornaron las paredes de la casa de Francisco de Goya por el año 1819, la llamada "Quinta del Sordo", esta obra pertenece a la serie de las Pinturas negras, pintadas por el mismo Francisco de Goya, fue realizada originalmente sobre "Revoco" (revestimiento de cal, cemento o mixto usado como acabado para embellecer una fachada) y posteriormente en 1874 fue copiada al lienzo por Salvador Martínez Cubells, encargado por el barón Émile d’Erlanger, banquero francés de origen alemán, que tenía como intención vender esta y otras pinturas en la Exposición Universal de París de 1878, y años mas tarde en 1881, el mismo d’Erlanger las cedió al estado español el cual las destinó a reposar en el Museo del Prado desde 1889.

Esta pintura representa al Titan Cronos, llamado Saturno en la mitología Romana, al momento de devorar a uno de sus hijos. Hace una referencia al paso del tiempo y a la eternidad, siendo que Cronos se comía a los hijos recién nacidos de la Titánide Rea, hija de Urano y Gea, esposa de Cronos, por miedo a ser destronado por uno de ellos.

Según un estudio realizado por Sigmund Freud, Esta pintura esta fuertemente relacionada con la melancolía, el caos y la destrucción, elementos presentes en todas las Pinturas Negras de Goya.

This painting depicts the Titan Cronos, called Saturn in Roman mythology, at the time of devouring one of his children. It refers to the passage of time and eternity, since Cronos ate the newborn children of Titan Rea, daughter of Uranus and Gea, wife of Cronos, for fear of being dethroned by one of them.

According to a study by Sigmund Freud, This painting is strongly related to melancholy, chaos and destruction, elements present in all the Goya Black Paintings.
