Controversy For Second Coming

in #art7 years ago

Sounds fun...but some are unhappy...

DC Comics announced some plans this week to restructure certain departments. With that came some layoffs for some long time employees and a new slate of titles. I will be specifically touching upon one of those right here in a moment.

One of the brands that DC has under it's umbrella is the Vertigo line which has seen such cult hits as Sandman, Fables, Preacher, and more spawn from these roots. It is mainly branded as a more mature imprint and has been that way for decades. If you haven't read any of these mentioned above, I highly recommend them. Head to your local comic shop and pick up Volume 1's of their tradepaperbacks immediately!!!

Back to the matter at hand...A new Vertigo title called *Second Coming* that was recently announced has starting to create some controversy in recent days. It seems that some folks are upset at the subject matter. Let me give you the brief description straight from DC's solicitation.

*Witness the return of Jesus Christ, as He is sent on a most holy mission by God to learn what it takes to be the true messiah of mankind by becoming roommates with the world’s favorite savior: the all-powerful super hero Sun-Man, the Last Son of Krispex! But when Christ returns to Earth, he’s shocked to discover what has become of his gospel—and now, he aims to set the record straight.*

When I initially read the solicitations and saw this, I didn't even think twice. I kinda laughed and thought "this could be fun", and continued on with my day. I should have known better though as we live in a time where everyone is outraged over anything and everything. God forbid you put out a fun comic depicting anything Christian or Catholic based...no pun intended.

Forums, message boards, news sites, and Facebook groups comments have been lit up with "angry" folks for having such sacrilegious material being published!!! Oh the horror!!! I am a member of a bunch of said groups and the banter back and forth is both comical and depressing to me. Talks of boycotts and protests have popped up. I have seen some say that it's because of Satan and his minions. Oh that wacky Satan...

Most comic fans seem fine with it. It seems that most of the ire is being laid down by religious folks who don't buy comics anyway...at least from what I have read thus far. Go check out the story on Fox News or one of the Christian sites reporting on it. See how it differs from the initial comic sites discussing it. A simple google search can provide all the info you need!!!

For a group of folks who seem so hellbent on always pointing their finger at the left and calling them "snowflakes"...they sure seem super sensitive regarding a cartoon depiction of Jesus teaming up with a hero named Sun-Man. I am not wanting to turn this into a political debate at all. I am not poking fun or making fun of religion or people's beliefs. I was born and raised in a Catholic household. I went to church like a good little boy and as I got older, I drifted far from everything religious for many reasons. I merely am just so irritated of the false outrage that some have towards things that ultimately do not matter in the grand scheme of things.

What are your thoughts? Are you in the offended camp or the one that thinks it's a non issue? Why do you feel that way? Let's start a discussion! Keep it civil please...

As of now, Second Coming is slated to release with a $3.99 cover price on March 6th 2019. It will have 2 covers...one by Amanda Conner and a variant by Tom Fowler. It is written by Mark Russell with interiors done by Richard Pace.

Oh Jesus Christ what bugs me the most is how people get offended by anything and everything these days which is why humour often fails as everybody is so scared @blewitt

Yup. People are scared to say anything edgy or non PC today. Which is why creativity is being...I don’t wavt to say surprises. More like silenced out of fear of offending.

ROTFLOL!!!!!

I'm going to add fuel to the fire:

Here goes: Ready? LOL

THIS IS WHITEWASHING! JESUS WAS A BLACK GUY!

Ok, FIGHT!

Y'know what's really whitewashing?? His name wasn't even Jesus! It was Yeshua (more like Joshua)! The letter "J" is barely 500 years old. It's a white people letter.

Hahahahahahahah! LOL @ "white people letter"
Dman, this fight is heating up!

@adetorrent...I think the more important thing here is that it looks like Tupac. Lol

Hahaha. You have unearthed a fundamental truth there bro.

Lolololol

Fight! Fight! Fight!

In the grand scheme of things really a non issue. I was also born and raised in a catholic household, I drifted away due to the whole covering up of the child abuse than runs wild in the church. I do teach my girls some stories from bible teachings though. I was always mad my parents never let me decide what I wanted to do or worship. I realized I was not letting my first decide, I was really anti religion. So I stopped and a year or so later ask her what she believes. Atm she believes, I said since she does that she needs to follow certain things. Be nice to people, don’t steal, covent, anything else that will help her act right.

In respects to the comic, I don’t think you should make stories about people religious beliefs unless the writers are all Catholics/Christians his believe in God and is very respectful. I think it’s ok these people are complaining and that’s the point of dialogue so we can see where other people are coming from. Even if they don’t get all the facts straight, which rarely happens on either side of any argument.

At least they are only upset and complaining. Imagine if this comic was about Islam or Allah. They killed 12 people over that Charlie Hebdo magazine.

I totally get that and it’s totally people right to protest. What I am disappointed in is that we live in a time where this scenario happens....

A comic, movie, or pretty much anything comes out that can be viewed as controversial. Random human is offended and instead of just not buying it, seeing it, listening to it, or participating it in...instead tried to get it squashed and eliminated.

It happens when a stupid celebrity says something dumb or “insensitive”. Instead of just going, that person is an asshole and I won’t watch his movies anymore, or buy her music anymore...they instead get the torches and pitchforks out and try to ruin that person from ever working again. To get their show cancelled. To get a song taken off the air. It’s bullying tactics and it’s total horseshit in my worthless opinion.

The thought police try to stifle creativity and mold it to their beliefs. It happens on both sides of the fence so it’s not one party or group...it just depends on the topic of discussion and who is offended by what. I just don’t get what happened to “don’t like it? Don’t buy it.” It’s now “don’t like it? Ruin that persons livlihood and career and prevent it from ever being released.” It’s just a dangerous road that society has gone down in recent years.

Also worth noting that I haven’t seen anything to this extreme with this comic yet...but I would y be surprised to see groups trying to get this squashed.

Agree with your point on stifling creativity on both sides. I guess I didn’t realize the problem, cause I’m the type to just say that person/people are assholes and just move on.

Yea the whole “policing” each other has to stop. As long as you don’t physically hurt or touch me or I hurt or touch anyone. Things should be good, live and let live.

Exactly. I find it so sad that we are curbing creativity as of late. People are afraid to take chances. What’s the last really good and edgy comedy to be released?!?

It’s been a while!!

Lololol

That’s totally me!!!

I look at religion a lot like a penis.

It's great that you have it, and you're proud of it, but if you try to shove it down my throat we're gonna have a problem...

Great comment. Saving this.

This is the first I've heard about this. I work in a church, and love comics and all the other forms of visual art. I think it comes down to the intentions of the writers. If their purpose is to make Christianity look foolish, well of course the church will react. But from the short synopsis you posted, I can't see why it's so upsetting. It sounds like Jesus is being portrayed as someone who is loving the bad guys, kind of like how it is in the Bible!

What really gets me is when Christians are framed as these nutso extreme weirdos. It's really easy to poke at the largest religions (Christianity and Islam) because there's so much material and so many stereotypes. But then, that's all they are: stereotypes.

Maybe I'll read this. Saga is probably a better comic, imo.

It’s not even the Church reacting. It’s just some regular folks who find it upsetting. I guess I just do ln’t get being upset over something that has 0 effect on me. These people were not going to buy this book anyway yet are creating outrage over it. Just seems petty and ridiculous to me but whatever I guess.

I agree Saga is most likely a lot better. lol

See, my objection is not related to being religious. My objection is that this looks tedious and boring.

When I want religious references, I want guys like Garth Ennis writing the content. As you mentioned, Preacher was a Vertigo title – and cuttingly cynical in its presentation of religion.

Ah, the good old days.

I just haven't seen anything come out from DC in the last quite-a-while which had something interesting to say on the subject, pro or against. Avatar Press put out the truly execrable God Is Dead, for which Jonathan Hickman should be tormented day and night by being forced to read turn-of-the-century Russian novelists to learn some damn subtlety.

It's perfectly reasonable to object to what has no indication of being a good piece from a writer whose current claim to fame is the DC/Hanna-Barbera crossover series.

I don't need to pretend to be edgy, I just have no expectation of quality. I don't think I'm the only one.

It probably is, but you’d be arguing a different point if so.

Lol @ Hickman!!!

People can totally object for any reason. I just don’t like when people try to stop it from
Happening by bullying.

I absolutely believe we should let it happen. After all, if they don't do it, we can't make fun of them for doing a bad job of it.

And who knows? Maybe it won't completely suck. It's possible. They could play it straight. I can come up with a good five or six ways that the narrative could actually be worth consuming. I just don't trust DC to actually do it, which is a bigger problem than just the topic of a single comic.

Possibly a more interesting problem, really.

At some point, both Marvel and DC decided to only play it safe, only have one opinion between them, and suck out any kind of tension between characters. That's not every comic, but it's too many comics. It would be very nice to see that change.

Who are we kidding...it’ll probably suck. Lol

Keep the dream alive, man! One day – one day! – they will live up to our low expectations and on that day, it will be considered a win.
