RE: New page first look: Android Blues 101

in #art6 years ago

That was interesting, the comic page was good, but the process, you write and position the words first, to me that is mind blowing, you work the art around the words, I would have thought just the opposite. Does it constrain your drawing to do that or does it, the self imposed constraint, help with the vision of the strip?

To me the "flow" of the story telling is by far the most important, like the dialogue and editing of a movie. If you get those wrong, the movie absolutely fails catastrophically. But if you get those right, it doesn't matter what the visuals are - they could be drawn in South Park style and it would still work. :) But of course I enjoy the craft of drawing, and having readable facial expressions and body language will certainly help, so I do my best to improve that too.

It's important to take into account how people read. Of course some cultures read in the opposite direction, but for people who read left to right, and downwards, the reading of the page has to flow, otherwise the eye jumps to the wrong part and it's like jumbling the cuts in a movie. Very uncomfortable or destructive to the flow. So I read the page, over and over, until it feels right.

Also eye-lines are important, maybe even more than in a movie, because it can direct the reader to the next piece of text to read. Also, like in a movie, the 30 degree rule, and the 180 degree rule, are important. And to try to vary the shots in a long dialogue... lots of things to keep track of. :)
