ART TUTORIAL: Landscape with a girl and her dogs in OIL colors

This painting was a commission work, oil on canvas 30x40 cm. I made few sketches at the start and the customer chose such small figures in a landscape. I used some customer's references of a girl and dogs. The landscape is a pure fantasy from imagination.

1) Quick sketch

When you are doing a drawing on a canvas try to be very precise and clean because it's nearly to impossible to erase on such kind of material. Thats why it looks so terrible :) Also, the sketch doesn't need to be very detailed because oil is a very flexible technique where you can fix all shortcomings of a drawing.

2) First layer

I was working in a la prima technique with pasty strokes. That made my painting very decorative and close to impressionism. I used wide strokes in combination with some small ones.

3) White spots covering

Only some objects have 2 layers of paint. At this point, I nearly covered all white spots on canvas. You can't start the main painting stage with these white spots.

4) Tonal and color relations

When we have the overall color image of our painting, we can start to render some tonal and color relations. If you have a lot of pasty wet parts and want to make some changes inside of them, better will be to wait when your painting will dry up a little bit (1 day).

5) Foreground and charcters

Some details were added in important parts of the painting: dog, girl, tree, foreground flowers, etc. The large cloud was fixed in tone and color.

6) Final details

At the end, I painted detailed grass at the foreground and at the average plan. Also, some little things were added to make the painting more interesting and complex.
