Hello again, In the summer of 2013 I took part in a wonderful project in Copenhagen, Denmark which had a theme of 'Science Fiction'. There were around 20 other sculptors from all around the world working on many different sculptures. Here is mine.CyberPunk01.jpg

Inspiration

I wanted to create a robot which was from the past but with a retro futuristic feel. So drawing my inspiration from Steampunk this is what I came up with.

As you can see I had a lot of fun with the details and pretty much let the sculpture develop itself like a montage of different elements.

The sand was great and the weather perfect but, we did have an attack one night on the project. Some guys jumped the fence and destroyed many of the sculptures with a shovel. Luckily my sculpture wasn't touched ( maybe it was hidden from view in the shadows) but the other works were damaged and needed repairs and changes to get them finished in time for the opening. This kind of thing happens now and again on projects but you just have to suck it up and make the best of a bad situation. I'll show examples of this in later posts.

Thanks for reading this far.

Amazing! This is one I'd like to see stick around for a long time. Do you work in any more permanent media?

Thanks. For me I don't really mind that the sculptures disappear, it means I get to do more at the same place at another time. I think that if all my sculptures still existed they would cover a football field. Also, I usually try to get nice photos and hopefully on Steemit the work will live on.
I do work in permanent materials and have worked with metals, stone, concrete and lots of other stuff. It depends what a client is looking for. For the last 20 years i have been fortunate that working with ephemeral materials has allowed me to keep busy, see the world and get paid while do so.

You know, I think you may have figured out the ultimate in job security.

That's so true. Its a bit harder now with a family, because of all the travelling.

You have insane talent Dan. It's a pleasure to know you.

Thank you @condra. Pleasure to know you too. Looking forwars to the next @steem-dublin meetup.

That's so great! Is it actually held together just with water? My husband casts metal and he uses betonite and sodium silicate mixtures to help hold the shape. Are there any additives?

Thanks. Yes just sand and water but if we want the sculptures to last a long time we spray them with a very dilute mix of PVA and water. This just holds the surface grains together and stops the detail from blowing away in the wind. It also protects it a bit from the rain but allows the water to drain through. The 'Screen' as we call it adds no strength to the sculpture it's just like a hairspray fix on a charcoal drawing and will eventually break down. This screen is not always necessary, it depends on the sand. I will post more info in later blogs.

that's some pretty bad-ass sculpting man. Well done !

Thank you Sir

That's amazing, you have the skills. Done very well

Thanks, I still have alot to learn.
