How You Can Be Good At Drawing Too

in #art6 years ago

Many times I hear “You’re so lucky to be talented at drawing”, “I wished I knew how to draw like you”. Like Drawing is a talent you are born with.

“You can’t deny you have a sensibility, something more than everyone else”

Well. Maybe this can happen. If you have some kind of Asperger autism, some kind of genius or something else, Who knows ?

But for the vast majority of people out there, we weren’t born geniuses, nor robot printers. Like everyone we had to learn to crawl and walk for a few years before being able to use a pencil. And the first attempt is usually a bit messy.

The same way you learnt how to walk, you can learn how to draw. That sensibility people think is innate ? You can learn it too. It also has a name ! Principles of Design. Why is a flower beautiful ? Answer this question, take out the principles and you have a theory. Replicate it, if it works, you have a replicable exercise to create a beautiful flower. And if the same principles apply to any other objects, you have that sensibility.

On some forum you might see that once you are past your 20’s, it’s too late to learn. Every master was once a student (but I am just kicking open doors with that). Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Disney….. Some even begun quite “late” (after their 20ies like Beekart, Anthony Jones, Stephane Woota Richard….). The companies or the clients don’t care about your age nor your background and if you have a talent or not. Only the Craft matters.

The only thing left is Hard Work. You can learn fundamentals and be ok with that but if you want to take it to the next level, you will need practice. And a lot of it. Like anything else. And also a Vision to drive you to your goal. You won’t cut it but you will be unstoppable. But it may take years so be ready.

I am a strong believer that with only a few principles, anyone can become fairly good at drawing and painting in a short period of time (not pro but enough to be able to express themselves).
Especially with Internet nowadays, you can learn any skill at any cost.

What are those fundamentals ?

  • Design principles
I love this one as it is mostly reflection and decisions to make. No hard skills involved and it is highly translatable to any field (music, photography, drawing and painting, massaging, sports…..) And yet you can push the thinking so far.

  • Draftmanship
Your eye-hand synchronization. How well can you trace a straight line ? Is your hand is following your will on the paper ?

  • Volumes
Being able to see and understand volume in space, especially a 2D space. It also brings you some basic perspective understanding.

And from there I think you can follow with more scholar fundamentals like :

  • Perspective
  • Anatomy
  • Composition
  • Values
  • Colors
  • Light

But this is a never ending yet so interesting journey to learn about the skill and about yourself.

So Don’t believe what you hear. If you want to draw, become an artist, go for it ! There is plenty of opportunities as image makers and you too can do it !

It's a pleasure to have discovered you on Steemit, checking your previous posts as well. Thank you for explaining this topic so well, people tend to see the final results and don't understand that it's so much work. It's even worse when they discourage the new artists telling them they don't have the "talent". Also the visuals in the post are stunning, I like the way you balanced it with text. :) Looking forward to your new posts.

I accept ! thank you so much for your nomination @kristyglas !
And I reaaally appreciate the kind words and support, I will try my best to do more post relevant to that matter. there are still too many artists who are told that after 20 yo you can't learn how to draw or can't make it. Or that drawing is for kids, get a real job haha. I hope I can help them get the first foot in this world like other artists did for me =)

Thank you so much again ! Cheers !!

Man anthony jones is one of my fav artists of all time, but yeah it's crazy to see your amount of dedication and milage you put to get good i hope to do the same, and dayummm 100 thumbnails

I know right ?? yes. Well. The 100 thumbnails is just a half of the TN I did for AJ's mentorship haha just I had to do these ones in 3-4 days, the next 100 are more.... spread out during 2 months. have you checked his mentorship?
(and it's just a sample eh, I'm sure beekart, justmousepixel and yogjoshi on Steemit have at least 10 times my amount of work haha)

Wow... My dream is to become an animator... And i know i need to be good in drawing.
But @dunsky proofed me wrong... Somehow
His sketches are bad but he brings out good illustrations, i just think we have to know what we are good in... and PRACTICE!!!

It doesn't mean I can not do good sketches :) it's just the matter of time for me. Usually I am too in rush willing to color so I am trying to skip that part. But it is always better to do good sketches first...

Okay, i get it now... You know i had this notion that its only good sketches that make good painting... That's when you proof otherwise.

At least now I know the truth that my sketches are awful haha :)

Lol... Not really... They are exceptional when you start painting it... You just know how to complement them.

You are the best!!!

Daaang I like your drawings they're really vivid =O

Congratulations human. This post is featured in today's Muxxybot curation post.
