How to Become an Art Expert in 5 Minutes. Part II

in #art8 years ago (edited)

This post is a continuation of my previous post How to Become an Art Expert in 5 Minutes. Part I

Let us continue to get familiar with different styles in art.

Cubism

It is very easy to identify this style. In the composition of cubic paintings you can see sophistication of geometrical forms. This school was the beginning of vanguard style development. Cubism started with the painting of Picasso "Les Demoiselle d'Avignon" in 1907.

The figures are deformed and roughed. They are depicted without light and shadow. There is no perspective. Geometry prevails art. There is an opinion that Paul Cezanne was a founder of this style. Picasso was his student. In his letter to Picasso Cezanne recommended to use geometrical forms. He meant it like a base for the painting but Picasso understood it differently.
The most famous cubists are Picasso, George Braque, Malevich and my daughter.))

Futurism

The source for this style is literature. It is mixture of colours of fauvism and forms of cubism.
The futurists tried to show to the spectators a possible variant of urban future. The figures are split into fragments and crossed with sharp angles.

Abstract art

This school denies any copying of reality. The purpose is to achieve harmony of colours and geometrical forms and to call for the associations at the spectators. Scientific research proves that there is no better motivation for associative development of human intelligence than abstractions. There is always a sense in the abstract painting even if it looks like just spots, blotches and lines. The founder of abstractionism is Vasiliy Kandinskiy. Another bright representative of this style is a Steemit guy @mikkolyytinen. I really like his work.

Action painting

This style is painting with spots which don't create any certain images. Each brushstroke or line are put down with a quick movement of the hand. There are no plans or sketches, just an expression.

Dadaism

This style was a reaction to World War I and was born in Switzerland where people went to escape. They lost their Motherland and started new anti - art which didn't have any moral, logic or traditions. They recommended to live today and denied tomorrow. Technically it was mostly a collage.

Surrealism

This style holds the first place in the rating of abnormality. It differs from others with paradox forms and illusions. All surrealists were fond of unconsciousness studies. They created paintings full of illusions based on a play of their unconsciousness. The surrealists combined night dreams and reality. No doubts, the main representative of this style is Salvador Dali. You are very welcome to read my posts about him.

Pop - art

It is the brightest representative in mass culture. Pop - art is a combination of symbols of advertisement and other elements of mass culture. Sources for the inspiration are magazines, ads, packaging, TV, photography. It can be an absurd combination of all these objects resulting in collages, comics, caricatures etc.

Minimalism

The main idea of this school is to use minimum industrial and natural materials. It supports simplicity, lack of variety of forms and a limit to composition. It is free of symbolism and metaphors.

History teaches us to be tolerant to all art schools. As may be tomorrow you will look very funny laughing at something. But there is a slight edge which separates art from other people’s deeds. It is very difficult to determine it and it can change with time.
