How to Become an Art Expert in 5 Minutes. Part I

in #art8 years ago

The more I learn, the less I know. It is what I realized when I was writing this post.)) Anyway, I will try to sum up some main schools in art to help you and myself not to get lost in the art labyrinth. The search for new methods and ways of depicting of a constantly changing world is giving life to many styles in art. They disappeared and reappeared in altered forms. But the funny thing is that in different sources some artists belong to different styles. So, if you mess up one day mentioning the wrong style, just say that different sources give different information. And it is difficult to find an artist who will ideally fit in a certain painting school.

Let us start!

Realism

The task of realism is to depict the reality as exact and objective as possible. First this definition was mentioned in the 19th century to call the trend contradictory to romanticism and academicism. And the first artist connected to this new style at that time was Gustave Courbet.

Courbet in his painting underlined naturalistic details. Gustave put an accent on the usual life of people, on common events. He depicted a funeral ceremony but not the deeds of the deceased person and postmortem fate of the soul.
Realism in art was actively spread in France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy and the USA.
The French peculiarities: landscape domination. The artists tried to portray the real world, provincial nature. They thought that village landscapes showed the real France.
The artists of that style depicted real people and situations without idealization.
The most outstanding representatives were Jean - Francois Millet, Onore Domie, Ilya Repin

The Realistic trend inspired the development of impressionism.

Impressionism

Impressionism is a talented portrayal of the soul. This style is a reflection of the artists impressions. The artists of this school deny the importance of religious, historical and mythic plots which were common for academicism. To them impressions, feelings, and emotions were more important. Plain - air - painting in open air appeared thanks to the impressionists. For them it is also typical to paint with little and contrasting brushstrokes. Their paintings are very positive and full of joy and bright colours. The main impressionists: Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Pierre - Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Konstantin Korovin.

Fauvism

This school didn't last long and the main feature was simple forms and bright colours.
Paintings impressed spectaculars so much with their energy and passion that Louis Vosel, a French critic, gave this trend the name fauvism (from French fauve "wild animal"). By the way, they got the inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. Henry Matisse was the most outstanding representative of fauvism.

Modern

The main point of this school is specific smooth forms, lack of depth. They exchanged light and shadow with colours. The representatives of this style showed their truth, they underlined what they thought was important. They considered it would be impossible to express it with just copying reality. The brightest representatives were Paul Gauguin, Gustav Klimt, Edward Munch, Michael Vrubel.

Expressionism

This is the most emotional art style. Expressionism differs from impressionism with exaggerated emotion. The artists of this school tried to express inner feelings with outside images. Impressionists depicted reality underlying mood and impressions with different techniques but expressionism didn't copy reality but used more vanguard methods which helped to express feelings and emotions much brighter. The paintings are also characterized by angular lines and fast brushstrokes.
