The more people in an army, the more human losses and the more armed the more wars will be on the planet. Ideally there would be no army at all and live in harmony all but unfortunately that is not human nature. If you have grown up in a country then you will learn the history and tradition there and you will have the impression that your country is the best and worth fighting for it but that is exactly what happens to the people in other country with who will fight against.

Really good post! There are other benefits as well, personal benefits... like discipline. Being in the military helped me to become more focused and disciplined. I still get up in the morning, make my bed... I know this might seem silly to a lot of people, but these things are important.

Lamentably, I don't think the Army will take me... I'll be 72 in 2 weeks!

Wow, thanks for sharing a bit more about you, @richq11!

Thank you!

@richq11 you should not even be in bed. You should be sitting at your table writing your story. What nonsense is this? Ha ha ha....

Just posted Ma'am... as ordered!

You don't go around to anarchocapitalist supporting joining the army. Sorry. Unfollowed.

I appreciate your opinion buddy

I cannot on good conscience support your thesis, because joining the military necessarily means three things:

  1. Military service means service to the State, and government does not serve the interest of the people.

  2. Everything the military has is provided by the government, and everything the government has must be plundered from the productive economy. The government's monopoly nature precludes voluntary exchange or rational economic calculation.

  3. Every economic and technological "benefit" you cite demonstrates the fallacy explored by Frédéric Bastiat in That Which Is Seen, and That Which Is Not Seen.

Historically, "volunteer" armed forces were mercenary forces. In a way, current "voluntary" national armed forces are essentially mercenary forces with exclusive contract. The current volunteers are paid regularly like mercenaries (they even have pension plans) of prior eras, they are limited in number in comparison to the general population, and for some, the field is essentially a career. Unlike the mercenaries of prior eras, the modern volunteer army lacks the freedom of association and is legally bound to serve only one state, even if that state is not the best benefactor.

Mercenary, or volunteer, force is useful to a sovereign (or parliament) because its use is not subject to much public outcry. After all, most of the public is not affected in the use of force against another state, excepting for loss in monetary resources. The sovereign does not need to grant as much concessions to his subjects, when using a mercenary force, since the burden of war usually falls on the state coffers, rather than lives of subjects lost. This lack of public accountability allows for a state to conduct more ill-advised foreign adventures than when using a general conscript army, since the public is disinterested. The ease at which the US sent her volunteer army into ill-planned and purposeless wars in Central America and Middle East over the last generation displays the degree of public indifference when using a mercenary force to conduct wars.

I think modern volunteer army offers all the negatives of a conscript army without any benefits of a mercenary force. Modern volunteer force is much like the pre-French Revolutionary army of the Monarchs - conscripted from the lower strata of society, given cohesion through iron discipline and fear of the officers' whips, supplied by the Royal treasury. The only difference is that in the modern army, the members are enticed by financial reward and convinced by drivel of nationalism to join a sub-par mercenary outfit.

Have you actually seen the South African army? It was a great place to be but oh boy have things changed....what a disaster!
