When art deco design arrived, people loved it. The period of the art deco movement, roughly the 1920s to the 1930s, was a time of great hopefulness, societal advancement, and joy. Even today, people love it for its elegance, luxury, beauty and glamour. South Beach, Miami, Florida is renowned for its Art Deco Architecture. These photos of are from a walk I took along several blocks of these beautiful and unique buildings.

The architecture was characterized by rectangular blocky forms arranged in geometric patterns. Buildings were highly overstated with bold edges, sunrise patterns, and ziggurats. A ziggurat is a terraced compound of successively receding stories or levels. We might think of them as pyramid-like.

Building materials were modern looking stucco, concrete, smooth stone, glass bricks, opaque glass, steel and aluminum. Roofs could be flat or have spires and tower-like designs. Windows were often punctured square or round openings. Doors were made to stand out with embellishments and other patterns.

Famous fashion designer Gianni Versace was murdered outside his beautiful South Beach mansion, below.

You will noticed these buildings are painted in light pastel colors. You might recognize the architecture and those colors from the Miami Vice TV show that ran from 1984-1990.

This next photo has some of the iconic round windows.

During the day, quiet cafes. It's much livelier after dark.

For the last photo, look down the block. The entire district is known for its art deco buildings.

I'm a big Art Deco fan, there's a fair amount of it in downtown Johannesburg

I haven't put my finger on exactly what it is I like and don't like with it, but I love the opulence.
