It is the oldest monument from the Roman era surviving intact up until our day, located in the exterior yard of Topkapı Palace, at the entrance of Sarayburnu on Gulhane Park.
It has a height of 18,5 meters. It was made up of Proconnesian marble in a single block. The column head was ornamented by eagle emblem in Corinthian style. The name of the column comes from the abbreviated script in Latin written on its pedestal. According to the general belief, the tablet memorizes the victory gained by Claudius II against the Goths. Nevertheless, it is also possible to assume that it memorizes the triumph against the Goth clans by Constantine I in 331-332
6th-century historian lonnes of Lydia mentions that the column head carried the sculpture of Tyche, the Greek goddess of fortune and luck. Due to the fact that Tyche was a pagan goddess, it might have been removed following the approval of Christianity as the official religion. According to 14th-century historian Nikephoros Gregoras, the column carried the sculpture of Byzas of Megara, who gave the name to the Byzantium. One of the reasons of this claim was that the place where the founders of the city debarked to land was very close to the column.
