NOTRE-DAME DES SABLONS @ AIGUES-MORTES, GARD, FRANCE - 1. Entry to #architecturalphotography by @juliank ----- NOTRE-DAME DES SABLONS in AIGUES-MORTES, GARD, FRANKREICH- 1. Beitrag zu #architecturalphotography von @juliank
Dear Steemians
This is my first entry to #architecturalphotography initiated by @juliank.
I took that photo inside the the church Notre Dame des Sablons in Aigues-Mortes, Gard, France.
Liebe Steemians
Some historical facts:
The church Notre-Dame des Sablons is the last testimony of the embarkation of Saint Louis for the Crusades. The exact date of its construction is not known. It was probably built before the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes, around the middle of the 13th century, in the time of St. Louis and is of Gothic style. Collegiate church in 1537, it was ransacked by the Protestants in 1575. The fall of its bell tower in 1634 caused extensive damage, making it unusable for nearly a century. The parish is transferred, for a time, to the Chapel of the White Penitents. The main work took place from 1738 to 1744, both on the orientation of the building and on the clock tower. During the French Revolution, the building served as a decadal church, barracks and salt depot. It did not become a Catholic church again until 1804 and was restored in a neo-classical-baroque style.
The church has been listed as a historic monument since December 6, 1949 and has been listed for its Gallo-Roman altar since August 31,1990.
From 1964 to 1967 all the 19th century decorations disappeared, notably the coffered ceilings, giving way to the much more sober and medieval church that we see today. The rest of the 18th and 19th century furniture disappeared on this occasion, except for a few statues.
Since 1991, stained glass windows created by Claude Viallat, a contemporary artist belonging to the Supports/Surfaces artistic movement, have given the building an extraordinary light and colour.
On 25 August 1992, the day of St. Louis, Prince Louis de Bourbon gave his first speech as heir to the throne of France. He was then made honorary citizen of the city of Aigues-Mortes by the mayor, René Jeannot.
On April 25, 2014, the city of Aigues-Mortes was organizing commemorative ceremonies to mark the 800th anniversary of the birth of Saint Louis. A mass was then celebrated by Bishop Robert Wattebled. Prince Louis de Bourbon, Duke of Anjou, and his wife, Marie-Marguerite, participated in the commemorations.
I hope you liked my post and I wish you all a wonderful day.
Take care,
Yours, Patrick
Einige historische Fakten:
Euer Patrick

Excellent story and very nice photo, @pipurilla, good luck at the competition!
Thank you so very much! :)
The light has such a dramatic effect on this shot. I love how the rays of sunlight pass through the stained glass and create such a mysterious beauty, one that wraps its arm of peace around my soul.
Wonderful shot, Patrick. Upped and Steemed
Thank you so very much, Denise! This was exactly the feeling I had, when I entered this church. Because of the poor lighting, I tried to take the photo with long exposure to keep the atmosphere alive. Therefore I've put the camera on the last pew.
Aigues-mortes is a wonderful medieval city with a complete curtain wall. Guess I will post about it in the next future. Unfortunately, I don't have much time at the moment, because of the many rehearsals with the theatre group, so the posts are currently a little shorter and the answers will come later.
I wish a wonderful day and a great weekend to you, my dear friend! :)
The photo is spectacular, the light in the cathedral helps much to that effect.
Thanks a lot!
Yes, indeed, the lighting was amazing. That's why I decided to take the picture. But I had do do it in long exposure, so I used the last church pew to put the camera on it.
