Archdruid Game Villains Contest - Silent Hill 2: An Ode To Maria
There were many game villains through the years and many of them were memorable. While I'll never forget the battle with Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid, the one that is stuck in my mind is the final boss in Silent Hill 2. The confrontation with Maria is a memorable one, not because it's very exciting or original, but more because it's the final barrier before all is revealed.
Some of you who have played Silent Hill 2 will probably share my idea that this is one of the best horror games ever made, and the intriguing Maria is a huge question mark through the entire game, until the spine-chilling conclusion. And so, I decided to create a poem for Maria. It may be fun, it may be silly, maybe both, you tell me.

For Maria
You’ve been haunting my psyche
Sending letters from the grave
Luring me into Silent Hill
Should I ever be so brave
You look so different now
That new style, those new clothes
Are you really the Mary I loved
Or maybe some doppelganger, who knows
For some reason, you’re now Maria
Not Mary, as it was before
What is it with all the dying
All the screams, all the gore?
How many times I tried to save you
From all those nightmares, from Pyramid Head
In the end I always knew
You were just as good as dead
I wanted Mary, not this new Maria
You can’t get under my skin
I’ll end this once and for all
You are not her real twin
You are a product of my imagination
My frail mind, weak and obsessed
I made a big, big mistake
I’m so sorry, I was too stressed
Now it’s time to end the nightmare
Man, this place smells like piss and rats
Should I use the pistol or the shotgun
Will you stop sending those bats?
You can fly wherever you want
But why do it upside down?
And what is up with that cage
That was something of a letdown
Don’t kick’em when they are down
That is what they used to say
But what about a bullet in your face
I guess that is probably okay
I’m not feeling so well
Is this nightmare really happening?
I guess I’ll go for a ride
To the bottom of the lake, drowning

I Love silent hill 2 but honestly I only remember pyramid head and the weird nurses as enemies. The story is what i really remember, the gameplay servicable but ultimately forgetable.
You remember well, my friend. It was all about the story, atmosphere and subtext. Gameplay was just OK, but I loved it for the rest.
In fact, that is why I never replay games years later. Just like older TV shows or movies, I fear that I may become disappointed with them :)
