GAME ON!

1992: The Bebining.

Midway Games was the studio responsible for the creation of this game, which very soon would become one of the classics with a seal of internationally recognized quality in fight (opponent vs. opponent).

However, the fame of Mortal Kombat is not only attributed to it (after all, other fighting games had already been released previously), but by innovations that critics and the public would soon notice.

The story is simple: several fighters have to face each other (individually) in a league to become the best fighter in a tournament where the only rule is there are no rules. Each player chooses a fighter to be their persona in the game and face the enemies until the moment they can stand (thus defeating the opponent).

Nostalgia Games

A New Concept.

The recurring themes that were used to create this game are fantasy and science. The characters are extremely creative, because they are not limited to mastering specific martial arts (although the movements are similar, the idea of the creators is to show that they defend different types of fighting), but rather, carry within themselves particularities that are placed inside the game as special powers... In this way, the players' interest in the game goes beyond the beatings, arousing the curiosity to discover what additional skill hides each of the fighters.

In addition, the success of the game solidifies completely by presenting something - until then - unprecedented: high levels of violence related to the blows that are given by the characters, especially when it comes to the end of the fight. This was all something visually new and that revolutionized the perspective on this type of game.

At this point each player can make use of a specific combination (triggered by a sequence in the video game control buttons... by the way, it's something that is not always very easy to be done) to make each character perform finalizations of movements known as fatality.

Digital Trends

Unusual Violence.

Fatalities are very creative sequences of strokes and always tend to be extremely violent, but can only be performed when one of the opponents loses the fight and the controller responsible for controlling the winning character correctly performs the sequence in control (something that is not always so easy to be done, because the sequence that makes "magic" happen to some characters is relatively complex... and the lesser of the errors causes a failure).

This increases the level of instigation to an even higher level (depending on the addiction... the scenario gets very tense at times, haha), because many players place fatality as the main goal to be fulfilled within the game (and see the enemy being destroyed in a generally bizarre way becomes something very pleasurable).

Distinct Profiles in Parallel Worlds.

Each character has specific profiles and characteristics, making it possible for each player to develop a particular empathy with some of them (which in turn brings more attention to the game, increasing the level of competitiveness). The technical issues of the game are very interesting - especially considering the time of the launch of the game - and help establish the atmosphere necessary for the adventure to be taken seriously.

Scenarios where fights take place always refer to some kind of specific culture, and this care around production shows that the only concern of their filmmakers is not only with the struggles themselves but with creating a kind of "parallel world" that justifies the occurrence of situations. With such fidelity that the game makes a point of being built, the experience of being a tournament fighter becomes something more interesting.

Who is ready for a fever?

Mortal Kombat became a worldwide hit, and the fever for that game resulted in later game editions (where the total of everything that has been sold to date totals more than 35 million units), HQ's, cartoons / web-series, toys and animated and live-action movies (which became very popular).

It's regarded as one of the games that has paved the way for more acceptance among the most violent video games, thus establishing a new level of entertainment. In addition, it has become an important part of world pop culture and this was expressed in tattoos, graffiti and cosplays, for example:

The Life Beyond the Game.

A new movie - reboot - is already being produced by director-producer James Wan (The Conjuring) and with it, the promise of a +18 movie and with the insane presence of fatalities (which would be really awesome)!

While this is not happening, how about reliving the nostalgia of live action movies watching these two trailers?

Mortal Kombat (The 1st movie)

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (The 2nd movie)
