Apertus: The Open-Source Filmcamera

in #apertus7 years ago

What happens if movie makers get fed up with having to use ridiculously expensive equipment that doesn't actually do exactly what they need it to do? They create their own camera.
The Apertus Axiom is the first open-source film camera developed right now.

Why Open-Source?

"Freedom of technology, information, education, knowledge, culture and arts doesn't imply that everything needs to be free of charge, but that these assets are controlled collectively."

"The apertus° project is based on software free to be used for any purpose, free to be studied, examined, modified and redistributed – which includes distributing your modified versions. Hence, products and services developed by apertus° are almost exclusevly released under GNU General Public License V3 . * Documentation providied is licenced under the Creative Commons License and the hardware under the Cern Open Hardware License ."

Apertus Axiom

The camera is designed to be modular, meaning each pcb has a distinct function and can be replaced easily if necessary. But the modularity doesn't stop there. You can swap out the sensor, use a different lens bayonet or add other modules later on.

Axiom is co-developed by the MagicLantern team that is know for their free addon for Canon DSLRs that unlocks hidden features of Canon cameras. The Axiom will have switchable film stock - you can change how information is read by the sensor.

An informative interview about the current status of the project:

Availability

The camera is still in beta with a lot of development still ongoing. Early backers ~about 500, are already receiving their early samples of the camera in their current state.
The camera will be hopefully ready after this summer, though this is not official.

    Interesting

It sure is. Thanks for stopping by! :)

    very interesting!!!

I entered the site to analyze better and saw a lot of interesting things, mainly in the details of the hardware.

Thank you for sharing this material!

I'm in favor of all things open source! Really cool that they are making a camera under GNU GPL. Looking forward to seeing more of this soon.

Where and when it will be available ?

Guess you'll have to keep reading news about the project to find out.

I will definitely.Good info by the way. Upvoted and expecting the same from you.

Nice post @sulev..do check out my snaps from scotland.

Interesting concept. I'll keep in touch with your posts to read of further developments. Are you on the Beta waiting list as a tester?

    No :D
I'm just very enthusiastic about new tech in general. Though I'd share this here. It's a cool concept and I think many (even hobbyists) will be interested in it. I have no clue about the pricing though. I suspect it will still be quite expensive, but nothing compared to what professional cameras cost.

Thanks for the update. I'll keep an eye out for more news via your posts. Thanks again @sulev.

Interesting but don´t think it will work. Most people will prefer the comfort of a cheap DSRL or blackmagic camera over having to assemble one yourself, no?

    That's not how it works.
The camera is a whole, but you can buy another sensor for instance or swap the bayonet if you need to afterwards. You won't have to buy a whole other camera for that.
Secondly it's open source. You can buy that camera, create your own software or add on for it and start selling that.

I get that, but I still wouldn´t use this on one of my productions (as of now or the next years) due to low expertise level of crew.

Also, this is not comparable to a cheap DSLR or even an expensive one. It's made to contend with film cameras that cost 5000+.

So it still competes with cheap cameras :-)
Not sure established production houses will warm up to this any time soon.
    Great idea though.

It's no RED camera for sure :P

Time will tell where it will go though. This might just be the tip of the iceberg :)

After seeing Lilly drone fail I am not too sure about these crowdfunded innovative cameras anymore :-(

Most of those crowdfunded campaigns are cashgrabs...

This is a great post, I learned a lot. Thanks for sharing and keep on posting ;)

Look at all these wonderful shit I have no idea about :DDD

    My thoughts exactly!
you seem to be in a good mood... what's today's drug?

Today is the drug of today, everyday is today when perceived from the present, that is today.

I fail to understand the concept of today... I am in the now.

    How soon is now?

It will Never come. It's always. :)
