Occurrence

Pygmy chicks occur in the damp forests of Central America - from Nicaragua through Panama to Costa Rica, where it occurs most often. The most known breeders of the pumilio variety is the " Blue Jeans" variety. Rare varieties such as "Siquirres" or "Darkland" occur mainly on numerous islands off the coast of Costa Rica. These trees live in large colonies of up to 2,000 individuals. They are terrestrial amphibians, rarely climb trees.

Look

The dwarf tuft is one of the smallest trees that is. The length of his body varies from about 2 to 3 cm. Nevertheless, it is a species very much sought after by the terrarists because of its beautiful coloration . Currently, 30 varieties of Oophaga ( Dendrobates ) pumilio are known !

terrarium

Tropical, horizontal layout and dimensions for the park 30x40x30 cm. We maintain the temperature at 25 ° C during the day and at 20 ° C at night. Humidity min. 90%, welcome fogger . We plant a lot of plants , and above all, there should be at least one bromelia in the terrarium .

biotope

Active during the day. The terrariums are very mobile, even "curious." D.pumilio is a species very grateful for breeding, especially their mating are very interesting. Like other woodchips , they spend most of their lives searching for food . The D.pumilio males, despite their small size, are extremely aggressive. That's why you can not in any way hold DWO ch together.

Multiplication

Until recently, dwarfed trees were considered impossible to multiply in captivity. The reason for this was the food of tadpoles. Tadpoles Oophaga pumilio feed only on the "empty" croak lifted by the mother. At the beginning, the terrarists dealt with them as with the tadpoles of other species - one can guess with what effect. Some breeders tried to "imitate" this food by giving the chicken eggs a protein of chicken eggs, but it also did not bring results. Some considered them impossible to multiply in captivity. After some time in the US, try to leave tadpoles in the terrariumcare of parents - to the surprise of breeders, well-acclimated mothers fed tadpoles as in nature. Today, they are easy to multiply if they are not stressed or poorly fed.

Oophaga pumilio festivities usually begin during the rainy season, more or less from mid-October to the end of March. If you are serious about breeding them, it is worth to spray the terrarium and raise the temperature slightly. Same Moon virtually no roses than ± from those to be completed by other drzewołazy . More precisely, I described the whole process in the Reproduction section . There you will also find some remarks regarding the reproduction of Oophaga pumilio.

The most important thing is to leave the tadpoles to the care of the parents, and to provide places suitable for their peaceful growth. The best such place are bromeliads.

Nourishment

We feed Oophaga pumilio like all other woody trees . Eat fruit, collembols, hatchling cricket, etc.

Comments

Oophaga pumilio is not a difficult species in breeding, but it is also not the easiest. First of all, you have to remember that you can not keep two males together. They are active, beautifully colored, and therefore quickly became popular in breeding abroad. Unfortunately, it is impossible to buy them in Poland , at least for the moment.
