Babirusa is a native endemic animal of Sulawesi, Indonesia.Source
Since 1996 this animal has been categorized as rare and protected by IUCN and CITES. But there are still often found in the meat trade babirusa in North Sulawesi. Therefore, LIPI biology research and development center in cooperation with the local government and the Ministry of Forestry and the University of Sam Ratulangi held a program of protection against these endangered animals. These protections include the supervision of the babirusa habitat and create a babirusa shelter garden on an 800-hectare plot of land.
Although solitary, they generally live in groups with the most powerful males as leaders. This shy animal can become fierce if disturbed. Long fangs sticking up, useful to protect eyes from rattan spines. Babirusa females give birth to one to two tails once a childbirth. Pregnancy period ranges from 125 to 150 days. Babirusa babies will be breastfed for a month, after which will find their own food in the free forest. For a year babirusa female only gave birth once. Adult age a babirusa five to 10 months, and can survive until the age of 24 years.
