As we know, endemic animals in Indonesia are the only animals found in Indonesia and not found elsewhere. Not even a few endemic animals are only found in one particular island or region in Indonesia alone. The fauna found in the Indonesian archipelago shows the types of animals that are being exposed from Asia and Australia, in addition to the special endemic animals of Indonesia. In the eastern islands in addition to showing Asian species, there are also marsupials and other Australian types. This indicates that the area has had a land connection with Australia.

In this post I will review some types of fauna (animals) endemic in various areas of Indonesia, including:

1. Anoa (Bubalus depressicornis)

Anoa is endemic to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Anoa also became the identity fauna of Southeast Sulawesi province. This rare and protected animal consists of two species (types), namely: mountain anoa (Bubalus quarlesi) and lowland anoa (Bubalus depressicornis). Both of these animals live in forests that are rarely touched by humans. Both species of anoa can only be found in Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is estimated that there are currently less than 5000 surviving tails. Anoa often hunts to take the leather, horn and meat.

Generaly, anoa has buffalo-like skin color, its horn is straight back and tapered and slightly flattened. His life moved where and when his anoa foe would defend himself by plunging into the swamp or if forced to fight by using his horns.

Anoa in the mountains tends to be more active in the morning, and rest at noon. Anoa often hide under large trees, under overhanging stones, and in space under the roots of trees or wallow in mud and ponds. Anoa horns are used to drill away bushes or dig the soil The lumps of the front surface of the horn are used to indicate dominance, while at the time of the fight, the sharp end of the piercing up is used in an attempt to injure an opponent.

Scientific classification of Anoa :

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Chordata
  • Class: Mammals
  • Order: Artiodactyla
  • Family: Bovidae
  • Upafamili: Bovinae
  • Genus: Bubalus
  • Species: Bubalus quarlesi, Bubalus depressicornis
  • Binomial name: Bubalus quarlesi (Ouwens, 1910)
  • Bubalus depressicornis (H. Smith, 1827)
