The Cat That Licks My Toes and Other Unusual Animal Stories

Yesterday we had a few visitors come to our property. It was a bit of a shock at first, but I was surprised at how calm we were to witness two gray striped water snakes show up at our house. 

I read that when you see a snake somewhere you normally wouldn't see one (such as in our yard), that a change is coming. Out with the old, and in with the new. Is it superstition? We saw two snakes. I suppose they were taking refuge from the heat, as snakes don't particularly like extreme weather. 

Occasionally, the neighborhood chickens waddle over along with a few cats and dogs. I believe animals know when they are welcome on your property. We like animals, so they pass through, and some even stay for a bit. 

We've had several kittens birthed in our yard, then nature takes its course and they eventually find other places to live. Maybe we're just a bit too boring here and they go seeking an adventure. 

Several years ago, my family had a pair of guinea fowl walking around their house, pecking at the basement windows. They looked totally out of their element in the middle of town, but they were on a serious mission. I was told they represent protection.

What has showed up at your house? I love it when animals appear as surprise guests. They always bring meaning and they are so much fun to watch.  

I enjoy stories of crows that bring people presents. The birds know when they are fed and cared for in someone's backyard. They return the favor with little trinkets they pick up along roadsides and in fields. One bird even grabbed a steak off the neighbor's grill and brought it to his newfound owner! 

We have a neighborhood cat that watches and waits for when I hang laundry outside. It licks my toes and gives me "love bites" on my feet. They actually hurt! But it never stops licking my toes until I've put the last clothes pin on the line. When I bend down to scratch his "chops" I get drool all over my fingers! Ah, what love we receive from animals.

I grew up with a cat sleeping in my crib. No matter how many times my parents removed him, he always came back. I think he knew I needed his presence. Or, perhaps he needed mine. He lived to be 16 years old and after he died, he seemed to have given me cat magnet powers for cats to always find me, knowing I'll take notice of them and scratch behind their ears if they'll let me. 

If you look a cat in the eye, blink, then look away and do this several times, you'll make friends with the feline. It works. I read it, tried it, and found that outside cats who were too afraid to approach will come near and sit on my porch after I do the friendship nod with them. 

Dogs are a bit easier. We put a small plastic pool out for my daughter one summer day. She enjoyed it for about an hour then came inside. A few minutes later, I looked out the window and three large neighborhood dogs were splashing around in the pool, having the time of their lives! 

If only we could be more like animals: carefree, doing what nature calls us to do, having fun doing it, drool and all. I may not want to go lick anyone's toes, but I would love to swim in their pool.
