I started this initiative a little while back but even though I visit the shelter roughly every week, it took me some time to get Ebony there at the right time to hand over your loving contributions!

Originally, I had stopped in to volunteer but I left with a puppy that changed my life and then an insatiable drive to try to help as many as possible. You can see our story here.

Having to fly to Malaysia this week meant I needed to bring the girls (I picked up another stray a few weeks after getting Bear potty-trained and feeling better) into the shelter to be taken care of while I was away however, that brought up the reality that it was Bear's time to be adopted and my fostering job was over.

Why can't I keep her?

Well, I picked up Bear as part of a fostering program, meaning she doesn't technically belong to me. I always knew I couldn't keep her forever but I wanted to help save her however I could so I was basically her loving nurse for a couple of months. I even got to keep her longer because she was so sick at first, so we were lucky to have extra time together!

Unfortunately, countries have these ridiculous rules over who can stay and live in their borders and even worse when it comes to animals. I am not allowed to stay in Indonesia without having to leave all of the time to renew my visa and have extensive travel plans booked which would leave Bear in limbo, always moving around while I'm away. Since my future here is unknown, it means she'd eventually be out of a home since at some point, I will have to again, try to find somewhere else to live.

It was with a heavy heart that I handed my baby back to the shelter for the adoption process, looking like a model with her shiny coat and full body. Taking into account what's best for her, having her find a permanent home is certainly better for her even if it means I have to let her move on. She loves being around other dogs and when I went to visit her the other day, was playful and happy which made me feel a whole lot better.

I wanted to keep her while she waits to be adopted but then I take away the chance of her being seen by families on the lookout for a new member just like her!

Talking to my own mother, the feelings I have mimic sending a child off to college, out of the home. Having raised and taken care of Bear to the point where she didn't need me anymore and could go off to find her own life path is really rewarding. Plus, I know she would want me to help others the same way I was able to help her.

When I got Bear-ella De-ville (devil) haha, she was a teeny baby that had been dumped in the river, and after nursing her back to health (twice) she left me a strong, healthy girl who loves shaking paws and never pees the bed and a perfect pup to take home FURever.

Spreading the Love

In trying to decide how to help this cause more, I have talked to Barc's go-to-gal, Ebony many times and decided that by taking in the young, abandoned, sick and injured strays, loving and nursing them back to health and then returning them when they are ready to be homed is the best thing I can offer. That and continual support which is my utmost intention.
