Animal Series #35 - Araniella opisthographa
Araniella opisthographa
Araniella opisthographa is a fairly sturdily built spider, bright green in color. It has a two-part body, a back (abdomen) and a proxum (prosoma or cephalothorax). The body is olive green or often a little reddish brown, wide, with fine, downward hair. The female back is large and spherical, pale green in color. The head has eight eyes, four relatively large eyes in the middle, which more or less form a square, and a pair of rather small eyes that are tightly seated on each side. The chelices are short, powerful, with teeth on the inside. The legs are medium long and quite powerful with dark brushes or thorns. The female has greenish legs, while the thigh of the male is more reddish, while the rest is brighter brownish with dark rings.
Araniella opisthographa is quite common and can be found in many places often in the vegetation, on shrubs and shrubs. They spin small fishing net in the foliage, often as small as the leaf itself. The spider's greenish color gives the good camouflage.
