Perennial Cornflower (Centaurea Montana)

Perennial cornflower (Centaurea montana) is a beautiful perennial flower in the Asteraceae family.

It belongs to the classic farmland plants and was introduced in Norway in the 19th century. Perennial cornflower was first mentioned in the Norwegian horticultural literature in 1873, but to England it arrived in 1596.

The plant is a grateful and wild ornamental plant that spreads with underground tiles. It is very hardy and originally from the mountain regions of Central Europe. The species is a little nutritional and it blooms from July to August. If the plant is cut down after the first flowering, it is able to bloom twice during a summer.

It grows up to 80 cm high and forms clusters with distinctive blue cornflower-like flowers. The flowers have a delicious scent and perennial cornflower is a very popular flower among bumble bees, bees and butterflies.

There is also a white variant of perennial cornflower, Centaurea Montana 'Alba'.
