Such lovely and such defenseless giraffes

Giraffe (Latin Giraffa camelopardalis) is a mammal from the group of cloven-hoofed, giraffe families. This is the highest terrestrial animal of the planet.

Male giraffe reach heights of up to 5.5-6.1 m (about 1/3 of the length is the neck) and weigh up to 900-1200 kg. Females are usually a little smaller and lighter. The neck of giraffes is unusually long, and this despite the fact that they, like almost all other mammals, have only seven cervical vertebrae. Giraffe can put tongue at 45 cm and is able to grab their branches.

Giraffes have very good eyesight, hearing and smell. A good overview of the terrain contributes to a large increase. Their tall congeners can see giraffes at a distance of up to a kilometer.
Giraffes are able to run fast and if necessary reach a speed of 55 km / h, that is, at short distances they can surpass the horse. But usually they go slowly, moving both right hooves, then both left. Because of their great weight and thin legs, giraffes can only walk on a hard surface. Swampy spaces these animals avoid, and rivers often represent insuperable barriers for giraffes.

And giraffes also canto jump, overcoming even barriers of 1.85 m high.
Giraffes are herbivores. Body structure and physiology allow giraffes to feed on foliage of tree crowns, where they have no competitors. The giraffe covers the branch with its long tongue, pulls it to the mouth and plucks the leaves, pulling the head back. The tongue and lips are constructed in such a way that they are not damaged, despite the branches. Every day the giraffe consumes about 30 kg of food and spends on food up to 20 hours a day.
On average, giraffes sleep 1.9 hours a day. They sleep as if standing and lying down. The duration of pregnancy is 14-15 month.
The newborn giraffe reaches 1.8 m in height and 50 kg. And after an hour the cub firmly stands on its feet and starts running after a few hours.
Despite their size and weight, giraffes still remain protective and need our care and guardianship.
