Anhingas are large water birds found in warmer regions of the country. They are sometimes called snake birds because when swimming on the surface their long neck resembles a snake ready to strike. Unlike ducks, their plumage absorbs water which aids them in diving, and often they can be seen on the shoreline with their wings outstretched drying off. Anhingas catch fish by spearing them with their long pointed beaks. I spotted this one along the Indian River in Melbourne, Florida.

An interesting bird to photograph, never heard of it before @rwedegis

We have a similiar bird in the Comorant family and Darter, more the Darter with the longer neck.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_darter

Anhingas are American Darters and are related to your African Darters. They look very similar. The Darters differ from Cormorants in the way they catch fish. The Darters have pointed beaks and spear their catch, while cormorants have a hooked beak and grab and gulp their fish.

I've never even heard of these birds before! Spectacular shot, Roger!

I never heard of them either, until I took a photo of one drying its wings. Then I did my research and would see them quite often in Florida.

Ain't it funny how often photography leads to Googling? 😊

That's pretty much how I do it! Take pictures first and then find out what it was! You never know what's out there until you get there!

Exactly! 😊

What a stunning photo!!

It is my 1st time heard of anhingas. Beautiful bird it is. Thank you for sharing. #steemitbloggers.
