One sign of spring I can always count on no matter where I have lived in New York state is the return migration of the Canadian Geese honking overhead from the south. Canada geese can live over 20 years and generally mate for life. Here you see two that look like a couple resting on a tree brought down relatively recently by a beaver.

You can see where the beaver chewed through the base of the tree to bring it down. I wonder if it plans to come back for now log later, or if it just wanted the smaller branches.

The geese's natural habitat is in marshes near bodies of water and grasslands. Their diet mainly consists of seeds, berries, grains, grasses and other plant matter. Because of this the birds have also become accustomed to living in suburban grass lawns and fields, as well as near rural farms and grain fields.

When the geese are ready to breed (generally after 4 years of age) the female will build a nest on the ground near water usually on a slightly elevated site such as a muskrat mound. She will then lay and incubate the eggs while her mate guards her and the nest.

Though their main breeding ground is in Canada, many of these geese breed and spend most of year in northern upstate New York and other northern states that border Canada. They will start to migrate south to warmer climates in late fall, to return to the area again in the spring once another harsh winter has passed.
