Ancient World Libraries

in #ancientworld6 years ago (edited)

Though they are taken for granted as a feature of every city and town today, libraries were once not so common. In ancient times, Libraries served as cultural touchstones and the repositories of all knowledge.

For a city to have a library was marked as a great achievement, and often would make that city a site to which intellectuals would flock from all over the ancient world. Some of these libraries, distance in time though they now are, were so immense and famous as to still be well-known today.

When one thinks of ancient libraries, one thinks of Greece, Egypt and Rome-the great libraries have existed the world over throughout the centuries. Fire, War and time destroyed most of the world's ancient libraries, and with them volumes of Irreplaceable knowledge.

Earliest Civilization
Libraries have existed since the time of the earliest civilization, they have belonged to private individuals, to towns and cities, to businesses and to colleges and universities. Their purpose has always gone beyond storage of books, Scrolls or tablets. In ancient times, it was difficult to make multiple copies of writings. Libraries acted to protect written knowledge.

Ancient libraries also did what they continue to do today: they organized information so that it could be accessed long into the future and served as a place where people could meet and exchange ideas. Like today's libraries, they also provided the service and expertise of the Librarians, who helped organize and access information.

When people think of great libraries, they often think of ancient Egypt, Greece or even Rome. Some of the best were found in other places throughout the world.

Now imagine yourself standing in one of these great ancient libraries, what would be the first thing you would look for?

Random drivel by previews scholars, their recorded and embellished overactive imagination about previews beings with supernatural powers and cosmic proportions; occult and esoteric means of knowing what is beyond, secrets of everlasting life and the imagined workings of everything dead or alive in this universe from alpha to omega. Just the usual ever-human random drivel...

Still better than todays' writing.

I really want to say that before knowledge was treasure and that's why ancient people were more explorative than today because today we are becoming pretenders means we are becoming followers and not inventers and in past people were more inverters and less followers and their grasping power also was great and always produced great literature and in my opinion now we cannot imagine that because slowly we are losing the traditional art and in my opinion no one is striving hard to promote these libraries and in my opinion there is an great secret in the books because books can change life and virtual reading is not that effective in my opinion. Thanks for sharing and wishing you an great day. Stay blessed. 🙂

Even that in our actually time thecnology has cover a great site in each activity, event, action, project and style of life; the sacred room determined library don`t pass away just because in that place many people finds always something that connect with them or some story, reading which in some way has a bit relation with their life reality. For that reason I believe that the library will never be eliminate completely from society life!

I would be in such awe of the beauty of the architecture first ! Here is a library in NYC within a museum. 9F94199F-903A-4B4C-A54E-D1974B633C77.jpeg25315EBC-157F-4ACE-A5F6-69D4C13CD00B.jpeg

Libraries are a reflection of the city's growth through the books that collect dust at the back of shelves :) The first thing I would look for would be something about the city the library is in. Maybe some old maps, memoirs and the like.

One of my favourite public libraries in Bombay, the David Sasoon Reading Room is frozen in time and a great place to discover first edition books about Bombay.
