Interesting question. I think it's because of this:

People are not in the drivers seat of their own life most of the time. It can be disconcerting, being responsible for everything that you do. But if you are just a passenger, along for the ride, how easy is it then?

You know... I think the Dalai Lama is wrong here.

Sure, some people work themselves to the bone to get rich and then spend that wealth recuperating. Some people. But most people work hard to gain much needed economic security for themselves and their families. People work themselves to death to acquire wealth because we live in an unsafe, insecure world where the bottom can fall out from us at any time. And money helps prevent that.

I like the Dalai Lama, but he is basically a rich guy who goes places and has people adore him. He has no idea what the lives of real people are like.
