Is the Belief in 'government' a Religion?

in #anarchy8 years ago

As a follow up to my previous article ‘Does Government Exist?’ I aim to tackle another question regarding government and if it indeed matches the traits of a religion.

One needs to ask themselves, ‘do we have an un questioning un wavering belief in this concept called government and authority and if so, is it akin to that of a religious belief system?

Here I have listed 25 common traits from religions both past and present to see what similarities they have in common with the belief in the state. See if this sounds like a worshiper or follower of the entity known as ‘government’ to you:

1. Consist of many obedient followers who do so WITHOUT question

2. Has a flag/symbol of said belief

3. Belief in some entity that can do things that normal human beings cant or don’t have the right to

4. Believes said entity to be the supreme ruler of the land 4. Believes one has an obligation to OBEY decrees in books by said supreme ruling entity

5. Speaks about the entity as though its an actual being that can do things, for example: - “(insert god) allows us to do this with its permission”  -  “I serve the (insert god/deity here)”

- “Im a representative of (insert god/deity here)” - “im here on behalf of (insert god/deity here)”

6. Believes all deserve to be punished who disobey the word of said entity and its representatives

7. Believes one must beg, petition or ask permission from entity or its representatives before being allowed to do things in life, otherwise it is forbidden by said entity

8. Lives life according to the teaching, doctrines, boundaries/barriers, does and don’ts of said belief written in some form of book or text.

9. Has never actually seen entity with own eyes or can even describe what it looks like visually without mentioning temples, books or men and women in costumes.

10. Sees those who oppose it as traitors, heretics, rebels, bad people

11. Has huge temple like buildings as monuments for said entity and belief system

12. Has men and women in costumes representing said entity and doing its bidding on behalf of it

13. Will give ones life and even go into battle in the name of said belief if commanded to do so by a representative of this entity

14 Huge endearment for symbol/flag of said belief and is offended when it is disrespected

15 Believe that their entity and belief is righteous and every other one is either wrong, bad or inferior

16 Will only do things If it has been said to be approved by said entity/deity

17 Believes that said entity will protect, provide, serve and secure the people who believe and obey it

18. Cannot imagine a world without said belief or deity 19. Gets defensive when said entity and belief is challenged and questioned.

20. Cannot keep logically consistent in their own head when talking about said belief

21. Will dodge questions and use other tactics like vague word usage, ridicule or verbal attacks to avoid direct discussion on what they believe and will try to steer the conversation in another direction.

22. Believes that all law comes from this entity and belief system

23 Will obey, believe in and live by it UNQUESTIONABLY

24. Indoctrinated into the belief at an early age

25. Offers the young as some sort of sacrifice claiming to be for ‘good of the land/nation’

Think carefully about many of the things which followers of ‘government’ and authority adhere to and the things they believe and advocate and then look at that list again.

If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll see that it it seems the belief in this thing called ’government’ shares quite a few (if not ALL) the similarities mentioned to most beliefs in some sort of ‘god’.

If you yourself are a follower of government, chances are you will deny, ridicule and get offended by this with your whole entire being, and if that is the case, so be it, that in of itself may show your religious belief and loyalty to the god called ‘government’. If after reading this you’ve become offended and outraged, then you’re probably a religious follower of the state.

.So to all of you religious people out there, Christians, Jews, Muslims or any religion, you might want to rethink which god it is that you truly serve as your authority of the land. Do you truly serve only one?

And for you atheists who believe there is no such thing as a god and have no belief in any of the religions of the world and think it’s all false, well if that’s the case, I have bad news for you:

The next time you speak about government, stop and think, are you talking about it as it is some sort of being, some sort of all powerful being that isn’t even human and must be obeyed, because if that is how you are, then you may have a belief in a god called government.

Home work:
Now after reading this, from now on, listen carefully to the words of others during political discussions and how they refer to ‘government’, every conversation you have in the real world, every video, every blog and just see for yourself how people refer to this thing called ‘government’ and ask yourself, are they speaking about it as human beings or though it is some sort of god?

And better yet, ask them about this, show them this article and see how they react.

Instigating, thought provoking topic. Upvoted.

This is a great article! I've often had these thoughts but have never seen this issue so well put together. I'd add that while I'm an atheist, I believe that statism is humanity's most dangerous religion.

State Killing stuff. Tickle them where it hurts
