Abolitionist Abstractions Vlog 10: Sleep? Meh. Who needs that???

in #anarchy8 years ago (edited)

Here's the next installment in my vlog series regarding my quasi van nomadism. It's a twofer today! Since I didn't get to post last night's vlog until this morning, I'm going to put this one (recorded this morning) up now so that my daily vlogs (hopefully) all get posted day of from here on out.

So Murder Dog and I survived our first night of stealth camping! Not a lot of sleep was had due to some overly cramped quarters, but we managed to find a relatively quiet street to park on for the night and no one came a knocking. I put some of the black out shades to use with some good results. I'll give further updates on this later once I get a chance to use all of them at once.

We had some issues with some water leaking into the Element because of some fairly heavy rain and a shoddy job of strapping down the car carrier (didn't I mention something about a comedy of errors? Hehe), which made the night extra interesting. The rain continued through the morning, but overall it was a successful first night. I shall return tomorrow with the next update! Stay tuned!

Hey man, my first night sleeping in my car for that practice run was pretty uncomfortable too. I was able to lay down in my backseat, but couldn't stretch out; I think I got 4-5 hours of sleep.

I know what you mean though. You'll obviously learn as you continue, but that first night is quite illuminating. After I woke up, I'd already started thinking about taking out the passenger seat so I could stretch out; that is, if I was going to live in there full-time.

Interesting stuff, man, I"ll be following along, obviously!

Yeah. Definitely a work in progress. Just like you, though, I woke up this morning with my wheels spinning. Going to try and find a way to put in some not-so-permanent shelving. Managed to ditch the rig, and a few other things I already realized that I didn't need, with the wife today, so there's a bit more room.

I also just "snuck in" to a campsite after hours, but I think we'll try staying in the car again, anyway. Have to be up and out kind of early to meet with my lawyer. I did get to test out the solar shower, although at night, so it wasn't so solar-y. LoL. At least I feel a bit cleaner. I'll take that for now.

Really enjoyed this man. Thanks for keeping us up to date. Wishing you and Murder Dog the very best! Viva stealth camping!

Thanks, Graham! It's definitely an interesting experience. Already a bunch to share in tomorrow's update. Stay tuned!

I love the name "Murder Dog". I've been in my van for about a month. The first night I was up all night due to paranoia and new sounds that happen outside. After about a week I settled in nicely. I'm sure with some time you will find more comfort in you vehicle.

haha. Yeah, I "stole" that nickname from a meme. She's an awesome companion, though.

I hear you about that first night. It was a little freaky. Luckily I was in an area that I knew well. I'm still not even a week in yet but I'm starting to get the hang of things. Getting a few routines down, so I can try to be productive, is my main focus right now.

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

The rain continued through the morning, but overall it was a succesful first night.
It should be successful instead of succesful.

That's what I get for trying to type with one hand while looking for something else. TYFYS!

I don't know where you are Jay, (thank God you're not in Philly, for instance) But stay safe. I always wondered how I would make out if I had to live in a vehicle. A van makes sense to me. I know a guy who lives under a bridge and uses the local health club ($25 a month) for showers. I'll have to look back to see how your story started.

I'm currently up on Long Island (NY). Funny you should mention Philly. I grew up in PA and Philly was always one of my favorite places. Definitely wouldn't want to try this there, though. LoL.

I've actually considered going the gym membership route myself. Planet Fitness actually offers a deal where you can use all of their services (including showers and haircuts) for $21 a month. For now I have a solar shower that I can use in a pinch (used it last night for the first time).
