Haithabu Viking Museum
My interest in the history of the pre-Christian people's of Europe, specifically the Vikings, in no secret so last year for my birthday a family member bought me a family pass to one of my favorite places on Earth... The Schleswig Viking Museum.
Yesterday, we realized that soon the living encampment area would be closing for the season so we loaded the kids up and drove out there to walk the 1km path down to the water to visit the reconstructed Viking village.
The grounds are filled with actual livestock with lots of trails and stations to explore. There is also plenty of areas to picnic and the outside area is dog-friendly!
There are two parts to the museum. The main part, which is located indoors and filled with artifacts and even a real Viking longship. The second part is an outdoor village with re-enactors and family-friendly activities.
Having Two-year-old twin girls and a 4-year-old boy (who loves playing with Viking artifacts) we knew our options were limited to visiting the village. Taking the whole gang in the museum would probably be frowned upon. Nevertheless it was An enjoyable experience taking the long walk in the sunny autumn weather.
When visiting the museum you can always count on a variety of European languages being heard spoken while you pass through the crowds of visitors. Yesterday my imagination was placing me back to the times when this was a real operational trade port and I was imagining all the languages one would have heard back then.
Who would enjoy this in their dining room? I know I would! Maybe next year for my birthday?
I got three words for you: "This is super cool man!" OK, let's call it five words. :) I want to visit.
Can you tell me, how far is it from Berlin? The reason I ask is that we are trying to determine where we want to fly into for 5 days next July when we head to Finland. Planning to fly into somewhere we haven't been, spend 5 days then out to Finland. Berlin is on the list of options.
Thanks so much! Well if you jump on the autobahn and hammer it and there is no traffic you can get there in 4 hours. Then it's only another half hour to me 😎😎. You could spend the night in our luxurious guest suite, the kid's playroom! Then a short 2-hour drive to Hamburg and you can fly easily to Finland. Or you could drive 2.5 hours north to Copenhagen and fly out of there. It's a little more expensive but you would get to see Denmark too! Hahaha, see all set up for you!

4 hours on the Autobahn will be two for me...I drive with the "Force!" :)
We're unsure where we may land, still deliberating. Vienna, Amsterdam...No clue yet. For sure if were near your way we'd want to catch up. In fact I was considering trying to arrange a steem meet up wherever it was, also in Finland too. We'll see. Tour guest suite sounds good...I've slept in some odd places so sleeping on a bed of lego and Bob the Builder figures won't kill me! :)
Let me do some research. Seeing Denmark would be awesome too.
Hahah! The good thing about Europe is you can't really go wrong and everything is only a day trip away. That's settles it then, your brother will host a teen fest and cover all the party expenses 😂😂😂

Haha, I'm sure he won't mind!
If I'm anywhere near you we will catch up for a beer and a burger, or sausage...Whatever is most legit.

The roofs of these houses look a lot with some that can be found in the Northern of Romania. We might have some viking's blood as well. Nice trip you had!
Very well could be! I'm sure the world was just as small back then too! Thanks for stopping by!

Your article about the Haithabu Viking Museum is very interesting.
The old culture is impressive.
Your pictures give a good impression of the museum.
If you still have time, in Saxony-Anhalt is a very old circle from the early days.

I wish you a good time.
Goseck circle
The Goseck circle (German: Sonnenobservatorium Goseck) is a Neolithic structure in Goseck in the Burgenlandkreis district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
Its construction is dated to approximately the 49th century B.C., and it seems to have remained in use until about the 47th century B.C. It may thus be the oldest and best known of the circular enclosures associated with the Central European Neolithic. Currently, the site is presented officially by the state archaeologists and the local association that looks after it as a ritual or cult structure.
The circle consists of a concentric ditch 75 metres (246 feet) across and two palisade rings containing entrances in places aligned with sunrise and sunset on the winter solstice days and smaller entrances aligned with the summer solstice.
Thanks a lot, @chruuselberri! Glad to see you again. That sun circle looks very interesting I have never seen it before! It's quite the trip for me, but maybe one day I will visit! Would be very cool! I live in Schleswig-Holstein.
