Trichechus inunguis is a species of freshwater manatee and is commonly known as Amazonian Manatee. It is mostly found in the Amazon basin. You can also find it in Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, and Peru. On a cruise trip of Amazon River at National Park Pacaya-Samiria, find some time to visit Manatee Rescue Center of Amazon. This center is aimed at protecting and taking care of manatees until they are young enough to be released in natural waters, i.e., mostly Pacaya-Samiria.
You may find some hunters during your visit who try to capture manatees as food.
Whenever a full-grown manatee is captured its young ones are orphaned. Another cause of the increase in young orphans is boat traffic. The young calves are confiscated whenever they are found on sale illegally and are delivered to Manatee Rescue Center by authorities of Peru. It is strictly unadvisable to buy any wildlife from locals or street vendors not only in Peru but in any part of the world even if you intend to help or rescue them because this encourages to sell these animals as pets and make fast and huge money. Do not purchase any animal from locals and discourage them from killing another mother. Instead, you should play your role in protecting the wildlife by informing local authorities about any such seller.
In the center of Manatee Rescue Center, you will get an introduction to this rescue project and some useful information about the species. You will find a setup where young manatees can be bottle-fed. Go for it and take back along a mesmerizing experiencing for your entire life. You can touch their silk-soft skin and make them feel comfier by giving gestures of affection.
It's very relaxing to see local as well as international bodies work for their wellbeing. You will see a lot of volunteers who give their precious time to these animals. Generally, it is nearly impossible to see an Amazonian Manatee in natural habitat. Therefore, the Manatee Rescue Center is the best and safest place to see them and feed them.
The entry fees charged by the center is very nominal, but you are advised to pool in as much as you can due to the expenses which occur at this center are huge. One of the areas where incur highest costs is the importing of manatee milk from Florida center.
