Amazon river is the largest river shares its bank with several communities which are the natives of Iquitos. The residents of these communities are naturally lovers of nature. They respect nature, preserve the environment, and nurture life. Yaguas is one of such villages. They are commonly known as the guardian of the forest. It is their cultural duty to take care of the river, channels, wildlife, and the forest.
Word Yagua is derived from the word Yawar of Quechua. Yawar means the color of blood. It is a common practice of these people to paint their bodies with natural red color obtained from achiote seed, which is grown in Amazon. Amongst the Yagua ones who are purely native are called nihamwo (means we the people).
Once Putumayo used to be the habitat of the natives of Yagua. They later on fled and settled themselves at Momon river banks in Iquitos. It was at the time of the rubber boom. Once you pay a visit to the Yagua, you will find them very generous and friendly. Western fashion can be seen in their living style. They always welcome tourists and teach them their cultural dance. You can buy handicrafts in their live cultural shows and behold a demonstration of the blowgun.
You will frequently see people dressed in their traditional clothes, which is a red cloth skirt worn by women and another skirt for men commonly called Champa. Their traditional dresses comprise of wristlets and anklets. All the ornamentals or nonornamental wearables are mostly made of palm leaves. You will like their look after using red dye on their bodies.
Yaguas are excellent hunters. You can enjoy a hunt for food with them if you succeed in finding a good friend amongst them. Their methods for hunting is more or less the same as it used to be in native times. They make use of blowguns which are easy to use but tricky to aim with. You can participate in the cultural dance of Yagua people, which was started many generations back. You will be entertained with darts demonstration and different traditional foods at Yagua. You can buy show pieces made by carving the wood, jewelry, colorful masks, or dolls made with hand.
The tour of Yagua may not be very facilitated with luxury, but it is delightful to spend some time in a little less grown community. You feel the freedom of life amongst these people and have a sense of various lifestyles present in the same country.
