Baler was the Spaniards' last stand through the Philippine Revolution of 1898. The 50-odd Spanish soldiers presented out in Baler Church during a year-long siege and declined to surrender, not knowing that the war has ended. The Spanish dynasty hailed the soldiers as heroes, while Philippine President Emilio Aguinaldo recommended them because of their valor and granted them safe passage to repatriate.
