Scary Real

in #amazing6 years ago

Virtual worlds are becoming so life-like it's scary sometimes. But when it comes to animating human faces and recreating natural movements of the mouth and the many different expressions, we're just not there yet.

At least, if we look at the latest movies and games, human faces are still stuck in an "uncanny valley" stage, where it's so close, but still gives that uncanny feeling that it's got no soul. Here's a comparison of the real and CGI versions of Grand Moff Tarkin from Star Wars:

CGI Tarkin vs Real Tarkin | Comparison

Still not quite there yet. But developments are going ever faster and I found a video with a face so real it blew my mind. It won't be long and even the job of actor will be replaced by A.I.... Have a look:

CGI Animation Tech Demo : "Snappers Facial Rig" - by Snappers Mocaps

Wow... It's not actually animated yet, but you can see the potential; it looks like the entire head is completely anatomically correct, with bone structure and the many small facial muscles all included. It looks so damn real...

Just wanted to share my amazement about this today folks. Just a short one today, as it's been crazy busy and I need to catch some sleep soon. Tomorrow I'll be back of course and hope you will join me then :-)

I think Tarkin was really well done, and a good example of use, when it was needed to be the original actor to trigger all our nostalgia, yet Leia even if it was a short glimpse failed, something was off, something was "not alive" and it turned to be so eerie, like a moving "doll". But I think we´re almost there. The example of Rachel in the new Blade Runner was also impressive until she "talked". Guess we have a "soul" after all.

I agree completely @yidneth; Leia looked soulless is a good description :-) And I'm so pleased you also liked Blade Runner 2049; I was worried one of my all time favorite movies would get the Ghostbusters treatment... But wow, did that work out great!

I love fantasy and scifi you know.
Yes Leia was "hollow" the smirk gave me chills. Sometimes something can look at is but not be us.
I loved Poltergeist (oldie) and the remake was horrendous. I hate new generations will link it yo that bad movie. Sigh.

The Snappers Rig is really impressive! :)
I think it all depends on the Artist, his Skills and his deadline. Many artists could create 100% real looking Charakters if they had the Time and Budget for it. But you also need to take Render- and Working Time into account, especially for Games.

Technically we could have Games with Graphics and expressions like the Snappers Tech Demo and maybe even better but it would limit the Game to high end PC's and also it would be very expensive to create. These two facts render the task uneconomic but the Graphics will still get better because of market pressure. At least thats what i think. ;)

Thanks for this great addition @remotehorst23 :-) I think your thoughts about the deadlines and other financially defined limitations is so very true! Yet another case that shows how the economy hides humanity's true potential ;-)

Wow, that is some pretty crazy stuff! If you want to see some other cool mo-cap work, check out some of the video for Star Citizen. They are pretty close to lifelike, though as you said at the beginning I don’t think they’re quite there yet.

thanks for stopping by @dollarsandsense; I really appreciate that :-) We're almost there though. Also @remotehorst23 makes some great observations :-)
