Alpine fauna of Europe

If it’s the four-legged fauna that interest you, then a visit to the Ecrins National Park is a must ! This wonderful national park is home to 68 species of mammals including chamois, ibex, hares, marmots and the more timid lynx and wolves which are spotted more frequently in recent years.

The best time to spot the ibex is during the rut, in late October or November, when you will be treated to some impressive battles between the dominant males! The famous chamois come down to lower altitudes in the winter and can be spotted on snowshoeing tours in quieter areas where the animals are not disturbed by the noise of ski lifts and excited winter sports enthusiasts.

The Ecrins National Park is home to 231 recorded species of birds including the spectactuar golden eagle! The park wardens organise regular walking tours to see some of this diversity. Visit the Maison du Parc in either Vallouise or Briançon where you can see the options available and also see their interesting displays. The best place to look is above Pont de L'Alp on the road towards the Col du Lautaret. Several of these species are endemic to the Alps and can only be found there such as the large alpine salamander (Salamandra lanzai).
