Moving from Photoshop to GIMP

Photoshop

Photoshop users will probably say Why would you ever want to do that?. It's true, Photoshop is sort of the standard, great things can be accomplished with it and hey... it is even a verb, it has got to be good. It is, but there could still be reasons why you can't use it. Maybe because your computer is too old, or your wallet too small. Whatever the reason is, if Photoshop is not an option (anymore) you can take a look at GIMP.

GIMP

Gimp is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. It is Open Source, which means you can test it for free. If you like it you can donate (link is in their website footer) and if you don't like it, just remove it from your system.

Differences

When I moved from Photoshop to GIMP, I got frustrated a few times. It takes some time to find functions you are so familiar with within Photoshop. But once you have changed your mindset, you will see, great things can be accopmlished with GIMP as well.

Rectangle/Ellipse tool

There is no rectangle or ellipse tool. GIMP uses the selection tools for that.

	Select the rectangular selection tool
	Change the settings if needed
	Draw your rectanglar shape
Click Edit->Stroke Selection... in the main menu	Adjust the settings if needed
Click Stroke	Your rectangle will be drawn

Image doesn't respond

This happened to me a lot. Clicking areas, starting to draw, erase or move, and nothing happened. Or in case of move, the wrong part(s) moved. You have to be aware what layer is active, always. Another thing is to keep an eye on selections that are still active. Those can confuse you too.

Shortcut

As with many other photo editors, GIMP has a lot of shortcuts to make your life easier. The ones I use most are, [ and ], to extend or shrink the tool you are working with.

If you can, take time to work through the tutorials, they cover a lot of interesting functions.

Photoshop

Photoshop gebruikers zullen waarschijnlijk zeggen Waarom zou je dat doen?. Het is waar, Photoshop is inmiddels de standaard, je kunt er geweldige dingen mee maken, en... het is zelfs een werkwoord geworden, het moet wel goed zijn. Dat is ook zo, maar er kunnen redenen zijn waarom je het niet kunt gebruiken. Misschien is je computer te oud of je beurs te smal. Wat de reden ook is, als Photoshop even geen optie (meer) is, kun je eens kijk naar GIMP.

GIMP

Gimp is er voor Mac, Windows en Linux. Het is Open Source, wat betekent dat je het gratis kunt testen. Vind je het wat, dan doneer je (link staat in de voeter van hun website) en vind je het niks, dan verwijder je het weer van je systeem.

Verschillen

Toen ik begon met GIMP waren er wel frustratie momenten. Er gaat wat tijd overheen om de functies, die je binnen Photoshop zo uitvoert, te vinden. Heb je je denkcellen er op aangepast, dan zul je zien dat je met GIMP ook hele mooie dingen kunt doen.

Rechthoek/Ellipse tool

Er is geen tool om een rechthoek/ellipse te tekenen. GIMP gebruikt hiervoor de selectie tools.

	Selecteer de rechthoek selectie tool
	Verander indien nodig de instellingen
	Teken je rechthoekige vorm
Klik op Edit->Stroke Selection... in het hoofdmenu	Verander indien nodig de instellingen

Afbeelding reageert niet

Dit gebeurde vrij vaak. Een bepaald gebied aanklikken, beginnen met tekenen, verwijderen of verplaatsen en dan gebeurt er niets. Of in het geval van verplaatsen, de verkeerde delen begonnen te schuiven. Je dient steeds goed in de gaten te houden welke laag actief is. Een ander iets dat voor verwarring kan zorgen is een nog actieve, eerder gebruikte selectie.

Sneltoetsen

Net als alle andere fotobewerkprogramma's heeft GIMP veel sneltoetsen, zij maken het werken een stuk makkelijker. De sneltoetsen die ik veel gebruik zijn, [ en ], zij vergroten of verkleinen de tool waarmee je aan het werk bent.

Haal uit GIMP wat erin zit

Als je er tijd voor hebt, is het de moeite waard de tutorials, op de website, te doorlopen. Zij behandelen veel, zeer handige, functies.
