Once I talked to my father. He was born in 1959, and grew up in the Soviet Union. I asked him about what life had been like at that time, what he had dreamed about and tried to achieve. He told me that when he was young, the thought of despair had been making him depressed.

People knew for sure what would happen to them, who they would become after finishing university and what they could achieve. And the most important thing is that they knew exactly what things would never happen to them! All the wonderful life you wish for yourself would never come true!

Как-то однажды я разговаривал со своим отцом. Он родился в 1959 году и вырос в Советском Союзе. Я спрашивал его о том, какой в то время была жизнь, о чём он мечтал, к чему стремился. Он мне сказал, что в молодости его постоянно угнетала мысль о безысходности.

Было наверняка известно, что с тобой произойдёт - кем станешь после ВУЗа и чего сможешь добиться. И самое главно, что было наверняка известно - чего с тобой точно не произойдёт! Всей той прекрасной жизни, которую ты мог себе вообразить, точно с тобой не случиться!

The fact that communism has disappeared, but that glass ceiling still exists is really surprising. I grew up under capitalism, my father is an entrepreneur, and he thinks bigger than almost anyone I know from my childhood. And yet, the feeling of the glass ceiling never left me.  There is the world in TV and my real world.

The world in TV consists of the inspiring persons who you know, like Steve jobs, Richard Branson or others that inspire you. And there is the real world with your problems and small tasks like paying for an apartment and a car loan.

There is Elon Musk who is really going to colonize Mars and there is me who can only dream of it. By the way, I usually don’t share this dream with anyone else, because I don’t want to be mocked. 

 Удивительно, коммунизма не стало, но этот стеклянный потолок никуда не исчез. Я вырос уже при капитализме, мой отец является предпринимателем и мыслит гораздо шире, чем большинство кого я знал в детстве. И всё же, меня никогда не покидало ощущение этого стеклянного потолка. Есть некий мир в телевизоре и есть мой реальный мир.

Мир в телевизоре - это тот самый успешный успех и всем знакомые вдохновляющие примеры, вроде Стива Джобса, Ричарда Брэнсона или любые примеры, которые тебя вдохновляют. И есть реальный мир с твоими проблемами и мелкими задачами вроде оплаты за квартиру и кредита за машину.

Есть Элон Маск, и этот парень всерьёз собирается колонизировать Марс и есть я, который об этом может только мечтать понарошку, наедине с собой, иначе засмеют.

And why is Elon Musk any better than I am? OK, maybe I don't care about Mars at all, but I cannot get past the idea that something is impossible for me.

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it.

Impossible is not forever.
Impossible is nothing.

I think Steemit is an amazing project that is capable of giving a person not only hope and faith in his dreams, but also a great tool to achieve it.

Yes, the phrase seems to be full of pathos, but gosh I actually believe in it.

А чем я хуже, чем Элон Маск? Может быть и Марс мне не нужен, но сама мысль о том, что что-то для меня невозможно, не даёт мне покоя.

Невозможное - всего лишь громкие слова, за которыми
прячутся маленькие люди. Им проще жить в привычном
мире, чем найти в себе силы его изменить.
Невозможно - это не факт. Это только мнение.
Невозможно - это не приговор. Это вызов.
Невозможно - это шанс проверить себя.
Невозможно - это не навсегда.
НЕВОЗМОЖНОЕ - ВОЗМОЖНО.

По-моему Стимит - удивительный проект, который способен не только дать людям надежду и веру в свою мечту, но и прекрасный инструмент для ее достижения.
