Chapter 1

Career Path

By stepping on the long path of a career in the hospitality field, you are choosing to overcome many tasks that may lie ahead of you.

At the same time you are choosing a journey full of ups (and downs) and great events. And as the saying goes “Buckle your seat belt…”

The career path in this field can vary from tourism to restaurant; from IT to front work with guests.

Remember, which ever path you choose you are in the hospitality field, which means certain rules will apply to any career that you choose in this field.

We will dig in deeper into each possible path that you may choose and go into deep detail of what it carries with it. This chapter is here to help you to get a hang of the basic rules for the hospitality career path.

Before the conversation begins, I would like to touch on a slightly philosophical subject, but one of great importance. The subject of ethics and social responsibility.

I will not discuss any particular schools of ethics teachings, rather the basic principles of moral behavior. For people who work in service those are a must. We must be able to comply with what we understand as good behavior, one that is socially accepted worldwide.

We must comply that certain things are bad, while others are good. For example, sneezing in public is an example of bad behavior. While wishing someone good day, is an example of good behavior.

Without digging dipper into schools of ethics, you must grasp that morally good behavior, which could start with a general well wish thinking is a must apply in the hospitality field.

A person that can manage to act morally well and in acceptance with the social norms will find the work in this filed easier to understand and easier to complete.

On the other hand, a person whose behavior might be interpreted as one of a rebel, against the society will find it much more difficult to find a path in hospitality.

An individual must be able to find his place in the ecosystem, not only in business terms, but in terms of being accepted by a wider society. That means taking consideration for the actions you take and understanding the impact they might have on the society.

In business there are also many ethical guidelines, those can be anything from reducing pollution to helping charity causes. Many big companies in the hospitality field practice charity events and do their best to help the environment (a simple task of recycling garbage correctly).

Of course it is well to note that some organizations apply those rules only in reply to public outcries, so it is up to you to select the company that you think implying those rules out of well wishing and not of publicity.

Make sure that your path accepts that corporate social responsibility (CSR) does exist out of ethical views and not for the sake of outcries.

Remember that CSR includes such things as complying with the laws of the government and ethical standards. Those include laboring laws!

Apart from that a CSR of a company must include transparent accounting, correct licensing, reduced scrutiny, well thought out HR policies, risk management and so on.

Always remember that it is up to you to pick the correct company to work for from the beginning of your career path.

Keeping all of the above said in mind, it is likely that you will help yourself to choose the correct career path.

But, apart from having beliefs and understanding ethics there is no one better than yourself that can help your own career to develop.

Making the right choices is not always easy, hence having a mentor or a book that can help you to make those choices is of great help. My hope is that this book will somewhat help to guide you into making the correct steps on your path.

Now, what do I mean by correct steps? After all, we all try to move on with the possibilities that arise. Well, making sure to notice those possibilities in time is what will help you to evolve correctly and quicker.

You may not know what path you want to pick exactly, but you know that you want to work in hospitality. Well, the best way is to start doing so while you are studying.

The more things you will be able to try out, the more critical experience you will gain on your opponents.
Starting to work part time in a coffee shop or an amusement park can be a great start. If you have the option to spend time in different locations you have found the golden bottom.

More so, when you gain some basic experience, try to contact local firms (hotels, or tourist agents) in the summer time; maybe they are looking for apprentices. It will most likely to be free of pay, but it is worth the more than vital experience that you will gain.

When you find yourself working in such place, it is only up to you to learn as much as you can, ask questions, study and evolve.

Try finding a mentor in those places; someone you can address your questions to. Those questions must include the understanding of the company’s strategies, its structure, and possible career path and so on.

Helping yourself develop doesn’t stop at finding part time work. It also means reading possible materials on a wide variety of subjects, regarding your career paths. From case scenarios, to news on the internet.

Leaving studying for work too early can be a big mistake, as it can put you in the position where you will be stuck with a particular path, that you might later want to change but won’t have the chance to do so. That means making sure that you have maximize your studying on the matter of your interest before moving on to the next step.

And of course don’t be afraid to move on forward and research when you ready, it is in your best interest!

When you do find the first company that you are ready to commit to full time, make sure that you study it (even if it may be a family restaurant). After all this is your first big step and will be on your CV for the rest of your life.
