The Five Elements of Alchemy

in #alchemy6 years ago

...everything around you, including yourself, including a bushel of pears or a rock... any of these things are Earth and they contain differing qualities and quantities of the three principal elements of Water, Fire and Air. And the process of alchemy is to create that Fifth Element. So what you do is you take the fourth element of Earth, which is derived from the three principal elements and you break it down into a chaos of those three principal elements. You break down the barriers between the different parts and you end up with a Chaos. This is called Fermentation or Putrefaction.

So this Chaos of the three principal elements in their impure state are separated off. The Water is separated, the Fire is separated and the Air is separated. And there are physical substances related to each of these. And then each of the elements, after it's been separated out is individually purified.

Now the the solid waste products are typically referred to in alchemy as Terra Damnata, which is Latin for Damned Earth. And the vaporous impurities that come off in the the purification process are usually referred to as Caput Mortuum, or Death's Head in Latin. So once these three principal elements have been purified then they're recombined and when they come together they form a new Earth without all the impurities. And it's so new or so different that it's referred to as a Fifth Element.

Interesting video, thank you for sharing your thoughts.

In my understanding, Salt, Sulfur, and Mercury are emanations of the duality which emanates from the One, Source. That said, the three principles are composed each of two of the elementals. Salt is Earth and Water, Sulfur is Air and Fire, Mercury is Water and Air. The quintessence is but the combination of all the elementals working in harmony giving rise to a unique energy of life, like Qi, or Akasha.

Thanks for the comment! There are several different schemes as described by different Alchemists. The one you describe is pretty close to the one I described. The version that makes the most sense to me sees Salt/Water, Sulphur/Fire and Mercury/Air as the three principal elements. The fourth element is Earth, which is a natural compound of the three principals (not "principles"). The fifth element, aka "Quintessence" is also a compound of the three principals, but each have been individually purified before being combined. This works for me in terms of the spiritual interpretation as well as the physical lab work. It really seems to prove itself as valid when manipulating actual substances in the lab.

For sure, whatever works best for you in practice! :) I personally like the schema I espoused, it makes more sense to me in lab work lol For instance, Salt being attracted to mineral salts in the plant kingdom. These salts are highly hygroscopic (readily absorbing water from the air) but are themselves, when purified, crystalline structures. This gives them the body, Earth, and the ability to mediate with the Water elemental, instilling it with the patterns of Water and Earth, with its main component being that of Earth.

That is a very good point. It resolves the issue of Salt, Sulphur and Mercury not exactly corresponding to Water, Fire and Air by adding just a bit of complexity. Hmmm... I'll definitely have to meditate on this some more. Thanks for the thought provoking comment!

Certainly, always enjoy discussions as such! Here is a good breakdown of the schema that I follow.salt sulfur mercur.jpg
