Short Impressions on AKASHA AlphasteemCreated with Sketch.

in #akasha8 years ago

I played with newly launched AKASHA alpha app (windows) with posting several and commenting one. Here are my feelings.

Good

  1. Medium style editor is cool
Although personally I prefer simple markdown styles, Medium style editor in AKASHA also seems cool
  2. Adding image is really good
Unlike Steemit, you don't need to upload jpg or png to image hosting site and copy/paste the link. Just upload then all set.
  3. Focusing on SNS feature
AKASHA hides each account's balance and other info that do not related with social networking. This is what Steemit needs to learn. AKASHA doesn't reveal each account's balance info in their app (while they can be found in the blockchain with more efforts). This makes people less compare with others and have unnecessary negative feelings.

Bad

  1. Too slow
Every activity(transaction) takes over 10 seconds, sometimes 20 or so. I think it cannot be compared with Steem's 3-sec.
  2. You need to sync the whole blockchain
The alpha is using its own testnet (with about 75000 blocks), so syncing doesn't take long. I didn't measure accurately but felt about 2~3 minutes. But syncing over 2 million blocks with many transactions (the main net) will take much longer, and will be horrible.
  3. Expensive
While Mihai mentioned that the code is not fully optimized, it is still expensive. With under 10 transactions (one tag creating, one commenting, and 5 posting), I spent about 0.1 ETH ($0.73), and I remember a short post costs 0.0176 ETH ($0.13). And a vote costs 0.0042 ETH ($0.03).

Short Conclusion

From the perspective of UI/UX, AKASHA seems good so far. But it needs to overcome fundamental weaknesses, such as high costs and low speed.

Sort:

A lot of people complain aboutthe Steem UX but I think the Steemit Inc is making the right move focusing on the performance of the blockchain. Bitcoin has a looming latency crisis coming. Steem's blockchain engine has that sorted and is going to improve. Personally I am just waiting until I can start coding my ideas, caches and a native interface app, and building ideas for a market in traffic relaying.

Please let me know what kind of tools you need .. we can maybe help you with the new python-steem libs which will make things alot easier to use and will be release in q1 2017.

Thanks for this info.

It's great to see some of these alternatives to Steemit slowly coming to fruition. I think the more these platforms/ ideas are exposed in the wild and tested, the more people will appreciate what has been created here with Steem/ Steemit.

IMO Steem doesn't only have first mover advantage, it also addresses alot of the issues/ sticking points that other blockchain based social media platforms are likely to encounter. What is also great is that Steem is only getting started and can only get better.

Adding image is really good
Unlike Steemit, you don't need to upload jpg or png to image hosting site and copy/paste the link. Just upload then all set.

That should be first priority for steemit if we want mass adoption! I really can't understand why we don't have an option like this yet!

Imo hosting images is bringing new risks into as well, ... so i'm able to see both sides ..

I think it is one of the "risks" we should take... The benefits will be worth it.

What is the risk - could it introduce malicious code?

Thanks for your impressions, I tested AKASHA too these days. Btw, what's your handle there, maybe we should stay in touch :)

I like the UX a lot, but beyond that there are a few things that are in need of clarification. I asked Mihai for an interview and he agreed, most likely I will publish it here tomorrow, if he manages to give me the answers in time.

Nevermind about your handle in Akasha, I found you and followed :)

That's why I say all the time that Steemit's zero transaction fee and 3s block time are killer features.

They truly are

Dead in the water. Slow = dead.

I havent checked out akasha yet, but figuring it costs people to post and vote, or basically do anything, i dont see this being an alternative to steemit or even competition.
I agree that this concept it dead on arrival, but could provide some new users here on steemit.
Hopefully akasha does strong marketing and steemit can reap the users.

Yes. The transaction fees are a big problem for them and a big advantage for us since we don't have them.
