ALBINOS ARE HUMANS TOO
INTRODUCTION
People with albinism are probably the least understood people on the planet. There are a lot of myths and cultural beliefs that surround them. Those afflicted with albinism, especially children are mocked publicly and alienated. They are often ridiculed in many African societies and are sometimes murdered for witch craft related purposes.

ALBINISM
This is a congenital disorder caused by reduced or complete absence of melanin. It is characterized by a partial or total lack of pigmentation in the hair, eyes, and skin of an individual. It is due to the absence Tyrosinase, a cell containing enzyme Tyrosine 3 Monooxygenase involved in the production of melanin.
TYPES OF ALBINISM
- Oculocutaneous Albinism
- Ocular Albinism
In oculocutaneous albinism, the pigmentation of the hair, eyes and skin are all affected to some degree. It is mainly the result of the biological inheritance of genetically recessive alleles passed from both parents.
When the human TRP-1 gene mutates it results in the deregulation of tyrosinase enzymes. While in Ocular,the pigmentation of the eyes is affected.
FACTS
Since the Albinistic gene runs in my family, my younger cousin being an example, the common misconception that Albinos are some kind of taboos against human nature and the ridicule that comes from the society has been experienced first hand by me. It has been said that Albinos are mentally retarded and need to attend special school's or shouldn't attend any at all.
But research has proven that the only physical disability associated with this genetic disorder is mainly visual disturbances.
Evidently, there is also no cure for the disorder and this has made it difficult for the affected to lead normal, regular lives. Those afflicted survive through alterations in lifestyle activities. Most times, surgery is performed on the extra- ocular muscles to decrease Strabismus. Nystagmus damping surgery can also be performed to reduce the back and forth eye movement. Sometimes, contact lenses are colored to block light transmission and bioptics are also used.
