WHAT IS ORAL SEX?

According to Wikipedia

Oral sex, sometimes referred to as oral intercourse, is sexual activity involving the stimulation of the genitalia of a person by another person using the mouth (including the lips, tongue or teeth) or throat. Cunnilingus is oral sex performed on female genitals, while fellatio is oral sex performed on a male genitals.

WHY IS ORAL SEX DONE?

Well, we really can't explain the origin of oral sex. Who originated it and why? However, the Freudian psychoanalysis theories classifies childhood development into;

  • Oral stage
  • Anal Stage
  • Phallic stage

In the oral stage, the child tends to explore things with the mouth. He/she picks up an object and next second puts it in the mouth. So during sexual intercourse, a person could be said to regress a bit into the childhood reflex behaviour and start exploring with the mouth again.

Coincidentally, because of the saliva providing lubrication, oral sex may also provide enjoyable sensations comparable to the actual sexual acts. Perhaps this is why people consciously do it.

HEALTH CORNER

The question we are most concerned about is: is oral sex healthy?.

This may not have a very straight-forward answer. There are some factors that will determine whether oral sex is harmful.

  • If either of the partner is infected with an STD, it may lead to sore throat for the oral explorer which may eventually lead to harmful infections.
  • If either of the partner has a genital sore/wound, this increases the chances of contracting something like HIV so many folds.
  • If either of the partner has an oral sore/wound or Brushing the teeth or flossing soon before or after oral sex, increases the chances of contracting STIs.
  • There's also a link between oral cancer and oral sex especially when the reciever has human papilloma virus(HPV) a known cause of cervical cancer and penile cancer.

Fellatio may reduce the risk of miscarriages by inducing immunological tolerance in the woman by exposure to the proteins in her partner's semen, a process known as paternal tolerance. While any exposure to a partner's semen appears to decrease a woman's chances for the various immunological disorders that can occur during pregnancy, immunological tolerance could be most quickly established through the oral introduction and gastrointestinal absorption of semen.

STAY SAFE!

THE ABC's OF SAFE SEX

  • A: Abstinence. We know how impractical this is for most persons so let's move down.

  • B: Be faithful. Stick to a single safe partner whether married or unmarried. This is still not 100% practical. So let's use the last option.

  • C: Condom. These can also be used for oral sex as well.

  • Others. Before you do oral sex make sure you don't have a mouth sore or that your partner doesn't have genital sore. Also obvious pathologies, smelly privates, smelly mouth, etcz may be factors to consider.
