AI News: The UK NHS is Ushering in the Rise of AI in Medicine

Based on recent news, one of the UK's biggest hospitals plans to implement a new artificial intelligence system which will effectively replace doctors and nurses. Its new role will be in diagnosing cancer on CT scans and deciding which A&E patients are seen first.

This is showtime folks, it comes down to money and the basic question is do you feel comfortable with a robot determining your diagnosis over a human being. Do you trust it has been programmed correctly? A human could be just as corrupt but one difference I see is the fact that they may have a conscience and be reluctant to do something unethical. Do you thing a robot would have that same dilemma? Only if the programming went parallel to the idea I would guess.

This isn't gameover for the robot invasion but the three-year partnership between University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and the Alan Turing Institute will effectively act as precedent and highlight benefits of the machine learning in medicine. The scientific community will have an in-depth body of research to plan the next moves into this new and scary future.

Prof Bryan Williams, director of research at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said that the move could have a major impact on patient outcomes, drawing parallels with the transformation of the consumer experience by companies such as Amazon and Google.

I'm writing about this topic today because from all my research into technology this article in particular rings alarm bells. It is my mission to raise awareness in my readers and discuss topics in which I feel have the potential to completely transform our world through technology in good and bad ways.

The world is going AI, we must be ready for it! One expert on the matter had to this to say about the coming integration of AI and the NHS.

“It’s going to be a game-changer,” he said. “You can go on your phone and book an airline ticket, decide what movies you’re going to watch or order a pizza … it’s all about AI,” he said. “On the NHS, we’re nowhere near sophisticated enough. We’re still sending letters out, which is extraordinary.”

I won't argue that maybe there will be some real benefits from upgrading technology in the NHS. If it saves lives I'm all for it.

According to a recent article in the Guardian, the first project will focus on improving the hospital’s accident and emergency department. This will most likely have a positive affect on government waiting time targets. People are dying and again if this speeds up the service and saves lives then its not all doom and gloom.

“Our performance this year has fallen short of the four-hour wait, which is no reflection on the dedication and commitment of our staff,” said Prof Marcel Levi, UCLH chief executive. “[It’s] an indicator of some of the other things in the entire chain concerning the flow of acute patients in and out the hospital that are wrong.”

The fact of the matter is that AI is coming and will integrate into almost every technological area of humanity. Are you ready? Ready for what? Well that's what we need to figure out, and fast right?
