Will Artificial Intelligence Save The Day?

Artificial intelligence is taking over our jobs - or at least that’s the headline. Google revealed an AI-driven personal assistant so lifelike it can mimic human speech patterns when doing things like making your next doctor’s appointment. In the future artificial intelligence will have the ability to take over many of the jobs that humans are currently doing, so what will the future of work look like after AI?

Robots can generally do the work of about six people, and they are growing more common especially in sectors like manufacturing. In the 1990s there was only about half a robot per thousand American workers. By the 2000s that number jumped to 2.6 robots per thousand American workers. People are being replaced by robots, but that may not be a terrible thing.

Already IBM’s Watson can personalize cancer treatments based on input data to give patients a better chance of survival, while the Associated Press uses artificial intelligence instead of writers to publish articles about corporate earnings. Even truck drivers are starting to feel the pressure from artificial intelligence. In just 15 years more than 40% of American jobs will be lost to automation.

But it’s not time to panic yet - automation is likely to mean that the work week will be shortened, leaving time for other things. Freelance work and the gig economy will take over and the traditional 9-5 work day will change forever. The cost of living is expected to go down, and there will likely be some form of universal basic income to compensate for a lack of work to go around. In other words, you will finally have time to do all that volunteer work you’ve been putting off.
